pjsny78 Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 I have a question and would appreciate any feedback especially you guys out west. I am an east coaster and travelled across the country and had my first experience in Density altitude and high elevation airports. My question is what setting do you put the mixture in for takeoff at an airport in excess of 5k ft.? I was in ABQ and used up nearly 70% of the runway to get to VR speed and it was cold. I think I may have had an issue if this was in the summer. I know you can’t give it full rich.
Cruiser Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 A very effective method is described by the Advanced Pilot Seminars and is called target egt. Knowing your take-off EGT at sea level (about 1280°F for a M20J) you lean the engine before take-off to that temp and you are about right for any altitude you fly out of.
