BEAUTIFUL!  I would love to have a panel that nice!  Honestly, on some of these upgrades to glass, I'd love to have the panel they started with.

If I can ask some questions, have you read Jonathan Paul's description of the work necessary behind the panel?  http://www.jonathanpaul.org/pdf/NewPanel.pdf  He claims that he had to cut out a lot of structure behind there for the gauges to fit.  Doing yours, did you feel as though you had to cut a lot out?  I'm very diy and would love to do as you have done.

Second question, I read a lot about people taking out the bottom shock mounting to get the bottom of the panel to be vertical.  Is that what you did?  I know people say that it's not a problem, but my IA is a bit skeptical.

I have a lot to do on my mooney, but if I could get a 6-pack for the investment of time and $100, I'd be all over it.

    Thanks!

One thing to remember is that Mr Paul was installing the 9 hole panel, which is more troublesome. If you stick with the 8 hole panel, apart from a few cuts, nothing major, it is pretty feasible. But I always rely on my A&P for those special things. It costs some more money for labor, but he does in a few hours what I would do in a couple of  weeks...

Just a thought, I keep noticing that these panel upgrade questions often become a contest where we show off and drool over all the nicest panels that you can put into a mooney...  Did you notice that the OP said,

I appreciate those who have the scratch to put that kinda money into their panel.  I wish I did.  I'm just looking to upgrade to a six-pack and unless I have a major windfall, I'll be happy to comply with ADSB in my vintage bird.

I spoke to LASAR, I didn't ask for prices because I was working on other, more urgent, needs for airworthiness, but they affirmed that they have a kit for the Left-Side panel if you want to do the work yourself with IA oversight.  I believe it is in the range of $400...  They will work with you on a layout (though I understand they have a couple of standard ones).  As mentioned, if you or your A&P is handy, it can be done for less yet.

Here is my modification using Lasar panels.

It was entirely done by my A&P and total cost, parts+labor and taxes = $1200

Mine is a rocker switch placed below the ignition switch.  My AI is vacuum powered.  My back-up vacuum has a rocker that is pretty close to the radio stack.

Also know: there are devices made by the switch companies that can guard the switch to help prevent accidental activation.  They are probably called switch guards.  The rocker switches get a cover placed over them, lift the cover to activate the switch...

    Best regards,

    -a-

The off the rack devices we're looking at are designed not to activate accidentally, meaning you have to lift it before turning it on.

We will have to work with a custom made solution, maybe turning the switch in a East-West fashion instead of North-South...

  4. Last annual, I had my Mx install an avionic master. Pretty little toggle you can see just right of the prop control(AVN) on this picture:

    IMG_1498.jpg

On my last flight, I found out that, in turbulence, this toggle switch is pretty vulnerable...

As I reached  to change frequency on my IFD, my hand, with a mind of his own, went in a downward motion, shutting all my avionics... :(

We're working on a solution for my next flight... B)

  6. When it came time to WAAS my GNS430, after evaluating all options, I went with Avidyne's IFD540 over other options and don't have any regrets. Bigger screen doesn't only to show more of your map, but also datas along with maps which is one of the greatest improvement over the GNS430, if you set aside the screen resolution, ease of use, etc...

So, as other have said, go for the bigger screen!

  7. Congrats to a new Super 21 owner!  I always refer to it as the Porsche Carrera of general aviation. Handling, speed and fast even standing still, my kind of airplane.

If you want to tour America with the wife, two kids and a dog, there's always a good ole Ford Station wagon or a Minivan...

My insurance company also asked for ten hours dual and five hours with six take-off/landing prior to carrying passengers.

Blue skies in your "Brand new to you" 64 M20E ;)

    Hi Drapo,

From what I see, the 65 is unique and kind of a year in transition for the cowling. The 65 has a small bump in the top cowl near the spinner where the 66 and up don't. This bump extends past the factory split line for the forward cowling section that will cause me to make one specific for the 65. The Pre 65 is even more challenging as Mooney spot welded the cowling sections together. I haven't spent much time on the pre 65's yet other than acquire as much of a cowling as I can right now to look at ways to modify it without replacing the whole cowling.

    Thanks,

    David

Thanks for the reply.  I am just as "unique" as the 65 even though I'm a 1957 model! :D

I have the 66  and up C & G cowling mod pretty complete and can proceed to building the STC package and get that submitted. The 66 and up E & F models, I still have the baffling to work out and the adapter to the air filter to make. I'm hoping to find an E or F near me to take some measurements then I can get that package going.

Maybe a silly question but do you mean 65 and up as the major modification in the E and C started with year model 65?

  10. I worked Houman's flight inbound to Lachute, where he cleared customs, then saw his target on my radar again as he approached Mascouche. I was hoping the timing was just a coincidence but got the bad news this morning.

To answer some questions, Mascouche (CSK3) is one of the busiest non-towered field in Canada and is planned to shut down in November 2016. The aircraft was found next to a highway that parrallels the runway about 1/2 mile to the south. At the time of the crash, at Mirabel airport, 15 nm west, the weather was VMC and winds were from the NE at around 10kts.

So sorry for Houman's loss, didn't know him much, but he was a passionate. Salut Houman et repose en paix!

Ok Cody, what you really is a M20 E . I'm surprised Bob Belville and Drapo, didn't tell you.  I also know this because I have one too.

Johnson bar . THE BEST!!  and some kind of garmin, ifr   a super 21

    Carl

Carl, the guy kinda sounded like he was hooked on a long body and, although there are longer bodied Mooney other than the F and G's, we all know that size doesn't matter, it's what you do with it....

For me and the kind of flying I do, which ressembles Cody's planned flying, the E is the perfect plane. I sometimes refer to it as the Porsche 911 Carrera of the Mooney fleet. Sure there are two «seats» in the back where you can fit two people for short trips, but what you really bought it for is it's super handling and speed...

That's probably why they called it the Super 21! :D

I fly a Piaggio P-180 as an FO for a charter company. In order to get up to Captain times in a decent amount of time, I'll need to fly extra on my own aside from work.

Ive owned an airplane and flown in Maine for the last 3 years, and worked in maintenance for the last few years. So I do know the costs involved. FIKI and turbo would be nice, but not necessary.

If you want to build time in your plane, I'd stick with the Cessna. Florida to Maine is around 12 hours in a Skyhawk while only 8 in a Mooney... Think about it, that's 50% more flight hours for a one way trip, at that rate, your could get to 500 in 9 months or so...   :D
