  1. Not sure how/what happened by my last post went under TLS Driver. Thanks to everyone that helped me get my daugter to DC safely! Mike
  2. This is all great info and exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the help, I will let you know how the trip went!
  3. I have to take my daughter to DC June 4 for a summer internship. We will be flying from Grand Rapids MI on an instrument flight plan. Any suggestions on which airport to use or tips to make the flight less stressful coming or going? Thanks
  4. Thanks Brett, I'll give it a try. I think the shops were each on the phone a couple hours and never got that advice. Does your factory tach run on the same pickup? My A&P said there is only one "hole" to put a sensor.
  5. Has anyone installed an 830 on a dual magneto? I had an overhauled engine (IO-360-A3B6D) and EDM 830 put on this past summer. Everything is hooked up and working fine with the exception of the RPM readout on the 830. Neither that shop that did the overhaul nor the Mooney center in town has had any luck with JPI getting an answer so I just lived with it. Now my factory tach gave up the ghost and I need to get it replaced and I thought I should get diligent about getting the EDM working. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Mike
  6. I overhauled my engine this summer and added a JPI engine analyzer. The #1 was always running the hottest sometimes going over 400 running ROP which concerned me. Upon questioning my A&P and switching probes etc. we determined the probes were reading correctly. We then took a baffle off the front of the #1 and it became the coolest running cylinder. Now I have been running LOP and it continues to run the coolest but now it is so cool at 280 degrees I wonder if that is good. If I switch to ROP it runs about 320 with the other cylinders in the mid 300's. Should I put the baffle back on and not worry about high temps on that cylinder?
  7. Has anyone had an experience with this as a inexpensive way to add traffic? I used to have a TIS system but I am often outside of coverage areas in Northern Michigan. I would display it on my 696. IAlso, I wonder if my my steel bar that the compass is mounted to would have an adverse effect on reliability even though it would be mostly behind the unit. Thanks
  8. Gary, Yes, I am very happy with the 696 alongside of my 430. The 430 is linked to 696 so direct to and waypoints entered into the 430 automatically come up on the 696. You can't put jepp charts on the 696 but the fact that you can have two different views up at the same time makes for great situational awareness. I am probably going to put in a Zaon xrx in which would give me traffic and weather on the 696 for a fraction of the price that I did in my last plane with a MX20 to display GDL weather and GTX 330 tis traffic. I also yanked my ADF to make room because I would have never used it and a few extra pounds useful are always good. I have pictures of panel in my gallery and the angle the avionics shop did works great and doesn't obstruct items on either side.
  9. I had the same dilema. I had all King equipment in my last plane so I was not opposed to buying a king GPS if I could save $$$. The problem is you can buy a used one but the avionics shops will charge a lot more than new to install if you want to file /G taking away the savings. You will still need to address the radio issue which put me over the top. I went with the 430 and put a 696 next to it in the panel. They tied them together so if I load an approach in the 430 it gets loaded into my 696 automatically. Also, when I sold my last plane the new owner threw away my KLN-94 to put in a 430.
  10. I have only owned my Mooney for a couple of months. I can tell you that you will have more fun and get more compliments that you could believe. I have had a Cherokee 180 and a 2000 Cessna 206. The landing were different but not difficult after getting some adivce from Trey at MAPA. My normal landings are better with the Mooney with very little time compared to my previous planes with many more landings. I can't comment on heavy crosswind landings as I haven't had any yet.
  11. Hillview Avionics in Muskegon built the bracket for me. I think he charged about $400 for fabrication and installation - the second is probably cheaper. I was very happy with how it turned out. He put it on an angle for better pilot viewing without blocking my view of the other gauges.
  12. I was the friend Randy referred to earlier who put in the 696. I finally got some pics of what this looks like in my panel (in gallery). I know it isn't as good as the MX200 for hard IFR flying (I had mx20 with xm, jeppview and TIS in my last plane) but I am trying to keep my aviation costs way down so I can keep flying without guilt. I had room in my panel next to my 430 and this was the answer for me to get weather. It is cheaper than the GDL 69 and has a bigger screen than the MX200 that gives me a second moving map option. I can get traffic to display on this as well and the avionics shop is going to hardwire for power and to the 430 to save duplicate entry. I also don't have to yoke mount with wires everywhere and the charts and Safe Taxi are there for backup if needed.
  13. I have not landed my 201J on Grass but bought if from a guy that lived on a private grass strip about 2,800 ft long with power lines on one end and trees on the other. Elevation was about 700MSL. He liked low and slow even with the obstacles.
