Final Verdict: Declutter GI275 ADI & Brightness
AdamJD replied to AdamJD's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
+1 for Google. I've been using duckduckgo.com for searching. It does NOT come up in that search engine. When I said I "googled", I was using the verb. So I went to Google.com and viola, you are correct, it came up first from piperowner.org. Thanks! Digging in now... -
Final Verdict: Declutter GI275 ADI & Brightness
AdamJD replied to AdamJD's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I couldn't find it. I googled for a while. Found the maintenance manual, which doesn't address my issue. Found versions of the installation manual which only included the first 14 pages. Can't seem to find the full install manual. Seems that's pretty secretive. Will call the installer next week. -
Final Verdict: Declutter GI275 ADI & Brightness
AdamJD replied to AdamJD's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Thanks David. Removing the heading tape and adding those additional fields must be an installer setting. I'll go back through the menu settings and find how to get rid of the CDI. It's interesting that heading tape would default to ON if you have an HSI installed as well. There's duplicate heading / course info within inches of each other. You would think the heading tape would default to OFF but would pop on if the HSI were to fail (or be turned off). Maybe that's how it works with the installer config. Need to do some digging but the manual isn't overly descriptive on this. RoundTwo - yes, some installs tie to the dimming bus. But mine doesn't change with my panel dimmer switch. Post lights and backlit avionics work fine - dimming up and down. ADI doesn't budge with the dimmer switch. We never discussed this at install, so I need to follow up with the shop on this. All I know is that it was very very bright at night until I manually dimmed on the ADI. And then the next flight in the daylight, the ADI was very dim until I manually brightened. Minor annoyance. I'll ask about both when I go to the installer for the sw upgrade for the auto trim issue. Hopefully soon. -
Retractable Step Vacuum Replacement
AdamJD replied to 802flyer's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Pirep. I love my electric step. Installer put in an up/down switch. The step automatically comes down when the master goes off. But it is slooooow. So I put "Step Down" on my clear of runway checklist. Step switch is right by the avionics switch, so it's hard to forget to put the step up on start up. For what it's worth, I think some of my suction issues were from the step. The installer showed me the pneumatic boot for the step and it was all torn from wear. I wouldn't be surprised if the steps wasn't even retracting before. Anyway, I love the electric step and am glad I didn't just have it welded down and I'm glad I didn't remove it like some folks do. My wife wouldn't appreciate a missing step. -
Hi all, Just installed two GI275s for ADI and HSI, along with the GFC500. While I am absolutely loving the upgrade from steam gauges, I do have a few issues I'm hoping someone can help with. 1) The ADI is very cluttered. At the bottom it has the heading ribbon, GPS / ENR annunciation, heading deviation indicator, etc. However, my HSI has all of that same information right below. While I appreciate the redundancy, I really want to get rid of the heading / course info from the ADI. A friend who has the same model installed had this done by the shop. See attached for his 275 ADI vs. mine. He also has wind vectors, temps and groundspeed. I want all of that to show in mine without the heading. Is there some way I can setup mine like his without having to go back to the shop? 2) The ADI is super bright at night. I thought maybe they wired it into my panel dimmer, but turning that makes no difference. The photocell seems to not do anything. I did manually reduce the brightness for my night flight. Then when I went to fly during the day, I had to manually turn the brightness back up. Is there something I'm doing wrong that the photocell seems to not be working? Thanks for any insights you can provide! Adam

I second that question. Those rear seats look great. Mine are headrest-less. And no matter how hard I've tried, I can't find a headrest that fits. For the OP, my 67F is the same. Reclining front and rear seats. Front are on a wheel with three positions. That wheel is wearing out on both seats, so I'm in search of a solution. One time my seat slipped into recline on takeoff. So now I'm hyper aware on takeoff and try not to put pressure on my seat. But I would like to find or repair the mechanism. +1 for the rear seats being 'easily' removable. I agree that verbal abuse is required to get them out though.

Retractable Step Vacuum Replacement
AdamJD replied to 802flyer's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
My M20F has been in the avionics shop for the past 5 weeks for an upgrade, which included replacement of the vacuum step with an electric step from http://flightenhancements.com/auto-step.html. I pick it up this Friday, so I'll let you know how it turns out. My Britain system was full of leaks, including the boot for the step. So it is a timely replacement. The shop put in a dedicated switch for the step - Up and Down. -
Insurance provider recommendations
AdamJD replied to Balckbird's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Third endorsement for Parker (and Jack Stanley). Helped me out this year. Found the best price, provisions, etc. -
Strange. So @DCarlton's posts are 5/16" diameter, which sounds like those are the OEM for the '67 and would fit my seats. The Toyota headrests I bought were 13/32" (6.5/16" or 0.406") and were too big to fit the seat. I'll remeasure what I can through the vinyl, but I'm pretty sure the holes in my seats are not 0.402" inner diameter like @M20F-1968's seats are. But even so, those Toyota headrests wouldn't fit that anyway. I've got an email into Aerocomfort to see what they recommend.

I'm looking to add headrests back into my '67 M20F. The seats have posts in them which are covered right now. I've poured through MS and read a lot about headrests, particularly that mid-90's Toyota 4Runner back seat headrests would fit. I've now twice bought headrests off of eBay and both sets came with posts which are much larger than the holes in the seats. I can tell even without cutting into the vinyl. I have the Parts Catalog, but of course the headrests aren't in there. The headrest tube in the seat is (part 140092) in there, but there's no reference to size. Has anyone had success buying headrests for a 60's E or F model? Do the Toyota headrests only fit later F models? The seats in my F are short and I need a little more height for my longer flights. Any advice is appreciated!

Thank you for sharing this. It definitely helps others. For example, the wind reporting at my airport has been missing lately. As I was arriving from a trip last evening, I checked several local airports on foreflight and winds were generally NW. So I maneuvered for the NW aligned runway. On downwind, with your experience in mind, I checked the windsock and it was pointed at me. I double checked a second windsock and it showed the same. So I turned around and set up to land on the SE runway. Sure enough, on final, the windsock confirmed I had made the right call to switch. The winds weren't strong, so it likely wouldn't have been a big deal to land NW. But I thought of your incident and decided to reverse course. So again, thank you for sharing!

Mooney Service Center Recommendations in South Carolina?
AdamJD replied to TommyFlies's topic in General Mooney Talk
Well, I read it here: https://www.aglaviation.com/news. Then I emailed them about the acquisition and John Car, the Aero Professional Services General Partner, responded quickly and stated that they retained the Mooney Service Center. That's about all I know. The previous website with Lynn's business has been replaced by the current one. -
Mooney Service Center Recommendations in South Carolina?
AdamJD replied to TommyFlies's topic in General Mooney Talk
I’m in the same region - southern NC. This will be my first annual as a Mooney owner. Therefore I at least wanted my first annual to be with someone who could help with Mooney specific inspection items, rigging, etc. I’m scheduled this winter at AGL Aviation in Morgantown NC (KMRN). They came recommended. However, they were recently purchased. Anyone have a pirep on the new owners and their knowledge of Mooneys? Also, any pirep on Freedom Aviation in Lynchburg, VA? -
Thanks 65MooneyPilot! I'm a new plane owner, so *everything* concerns me ;). However, what was troubling was that it was 7-8 hours after the rain and still was actively but slowly dripping. Which means some significant pooling. I won't lose too much sleep, but I'm going to check that all my drains are functioning. I suspect something is backed up.

Sorry for the lack of additional pictures. The plane is 40 mins from the house and I thought of taking a bigger picture about 30 mins after I left the airport :). However, the cover doesn't have any holes. It's the witches hat kind covering the single antenna on top. Also, I had the air scoop drain tested previously when I noticed water getting in the cockpit. The air scoop drain worked as expected. The source of cockpit water turned out to be the door and I've since fixed the seal. That and the new cover have kept the rain out of the cockpit, which remained perfectly dry today. However, I hadn't thought that tail or wing drains being plugged could cause pooling into the mid-belly between the gear. I can check those next time out. Any idea on how to check them safely? Pipe cleaner or something similar? I'll also check the wing-to-body fairings for tape. That was my only other guess of how the water got to the belly, but the cover is right over the edge of those. So I would have thought it would have made the water just run down the wings. Lastly, this was definitely water. I all but tasted it. Consistency and smell of plain water.

Unfortunately I have to keep my new-to-me '67 M20F outside due to lack of hangar space. I have it covered with a brand-new Bruce's extended canopy cover which goes from the spinner to mid-tail. I stopped by today to tinker with stuff and found a puddle of water under the plane, mid fuselage. I could see it dripping slowly from one of the belly panels between the main gear. See purple highlighted circle to show where it is dripping from. It had rained fairly steady for a few hours about 7-8 hours prior to me stopping by. Again, I have the plane covered from spinner to mid-tail, so I am stumped by where the rain could have gotten into the plane. Anything behind the cover would have to defy gravity and travel uphill. Anything else would have to either penetrate the cover, or come from one of the wings. Aside from the few inspection panels on the wings, I'm not sure where water could enter. And the inspection panels look tight. Any thoughts or ideas?? Anyone experience this before? Thanks! Adam

Hey StPete, I'd love to know where you land. I'm scheduled to get my AP installed late fall. I have the exact same yokes with PC button. Disappointed to see that we can't use that to run AP disconnect, trim and PTT and just build a plate to put all three on the thumb. I haven't had my yokes off to inspect them. How hard would it be to drill those two tubes into one? Making the turn would be tough, but it could be done. I'm really trying to figure out how not to do a plate on the base or lower corner of the yoke, as I like my yoke mounted ipad mini, and that wouldn't fit.

Thank you!

As someone who is actively searching for their first owned airplane, I'm feeling this pain. But it's all relative as many have stated. I learned in Cessnas and have many hours over the past 19 years in Cessnas. So I *should* gravitate towards a Cessna. But the cost of a Cardinal RG or 182 RG is in the upper $100s and well into the $200s. Whereas a Mooney M20C/E/F, with comparable or better speed and good equipment is going for $80-$100. I'd love to pay $60 for a really nicely equipped C model, but that's not happening anytime soon. And with fuel prices skyrocketing, a Bonanza that gets 160kts but burns 13gph might be too much of a compromise. The bottom line - someone please sell me a well-maintained C/E/F with modern avionics and a mid-time engine for $60k. Please!!

Ha! Smart observation. I'm not a doctor. I live in Maryland near DC (KGAI) and spend a lot of time in SE North Carolina (near 60J). I also travel to Florida and Pennsylvania a bit, so I'm happy to meet him anywhere in between. Is he in the Philly area? Please feel free to email me or message me on MS if you'd be willing to make an introduction. Thank you very much! Adam

I've been seriously looking for a while for an M20C, E, F or G, but haven't found anything on the usual sites which meets my needs. Here's what I'm looking for: Must Have: - Autopilot, as this will be primarily for x-country IFR - WAAS GPS coupled with AP - Mid-time or better engine and prop w/ recent flight history - Corrosion free (wing spar cap / cockpit cage) Good To Have: - Aspen 1000 or G5 / GI275 - Recent fuel tank reseal or bladders - Modern engine monitor Icing On The Cake If It Has: - Nice interior / seats (my wife's #1 criteria) - Speed mods (201 cowl, windshield, others) If anyone is thinking of or knows someone who is selling something that fits these criteria, please reach out to me on MS or mdpilots@gmail.com. Thank you! Adam
