  1. Agree 100% !! Best fuel / performance /payload ratio of the bunch. And the only year with a real throttle.
  2. There is a long list of errors by the original installer which we are fixing now. I wouldn't be surprised if this step was short cut too. Airplane is 1977. Year one of the J model. Thank you everyone for the ideas, appreciate all.
  3. Yep we've done that too. When you disconnect the drive train to isolate the ends the wheel end isn’t a problem and the aft end jack screw still has resistance but the wheel end has no mechanical advantage and thus trim nose down not too bad but nose up very hard. We are thinking it could be those coil tension springs in the empennage, but can't really figure out their purpose. Any idea on that?
  4. Yep did all that. We even added resistance and turned everything by hand. Could not identify any rough/sticky spots. Our current thinking is the only solution is new parts to prove what is working and what isn't, but we can't find any.... There are some parts on eBay but they are even older than mine!
  5. I think the electric trim was original. I just had it replaced with the Garmin electric trim kit that goes with the 500 autopilot that I already had installed.
  6. No it's not within normal tolerance stiff. It's dangerous if in IFR on approach trying to move it. Very difficult. Yes both on the ground and in the air, more so in the air with a load.
  7. Yep have already cleaned and greased the jack screw. Didn't help. “friction screw” on some models it’s sideways into the manual trim wheel .." - yes we looked at that screw also, but can't seem to make it any better. Can't find a replacement assembly either. Any ideas on that? Anyone know anything about the two coil tension springs in the empennage? Those seem to be geared to help with nose down trim, but we're not really sure if they impact nose up?
  8. Has anyone had problems with the M20J trim system being very difficult to trim nose up? My electric trim bit the dust, probably because it was working too hard to accomplish the nose up trim. Now that I've had to do it manually, I realized how hard it is to move the trim wheel. I've had my mechanic tear the whole system apart, starting at the tail and working his way to the trim wheel. He couldn't find anything really wrong with it. He spent over a week looking at every component, cleaning, etc.. Can't really find any thing wrong, and can't seem to make it more than marginally better. Any help out there? thanks!
  9. What is the make/model? How old is it? I have an M20J, would it work? I live in california so I'd have to have it shipped here, not sure if that's possible?
  10. Ah sorry misunderstood your question. Yes they both have adhrs and both have battery back up. Better plan than I had before if you ask me.
  11. I fly IFR. Had plenty of vacuum failures too with no other ADI in the airplane to even think about switching to. I guess there's a downside to every configuration.
  12. Well yes and no, the other 275 can also be used as ADI if the primary fails. Simple push of a button to switch it.
  13. I'm not here to justify anything about my experience or the installation. Just providing asked for information. If you have something better, fantastic. I have electric trim, the same trim I had before. Yes I need to use it myself, the AP tells me when it wants me to trim up or down. So maybe its not coupled, I probably would have had to spend more on the Garmin trim but I chose not to. The thing practically flys itself, the least I can do is trim... I'm ok with that.
  14. I don't know about that. They quoted, I accepted. I didn't pressure them on price at all. The final tally with things I added as we went was almost exactly half parts and half labor. They didn't complain and neither did I.
  15. Yes the GFC500 is coupled to it. I don't really know what kind it is, it was in the airplane when I bought it 15 years ago and I haven't had to do anything with it since.
  16. I just had mine done at LASAR in northern California. Overall they did a great job, and less than your shop quoted. They specialize in Mooneys. I had installed: GFC500, two GI275s (one ADAHRS, one HSI), GSB-15, new panel lighting, new LED wingtip strobes, new PS Engineering intercom - I was out the door at $39k and change. Existing equipment to interface to GNS530W, GTX345 and some old king radios. They were able to use my existing electric trim system so I didn't have to buy the Garmin version. They had to remove the old Century IIB and vacuum system of course. The auto pilot install is a lot of work.
  17. Yep already did, they said no. Also talked to Don Maxwell who said no. Top Gun said no. Michael who is George's Electric, retired in Dec, though allegedly is getting bored now, is evidently the only one in the country who can do an overhaul on this motor. Don said he heard of someone in Ohio who might be able to but didn't have name or contact info. LASAR has one they will sell me for $5000. My mechanic had a coronary when I passed on the suggestion of finding the brushes at ACE hardware. Thats where I'm at.
  18. Well I'm not sure what the tolerances are on the brushes but mine have about 3400 hours on them and were last overhauled in 1999. I'll look into the Ace hardware supply. Thanks!!
  19. Thanks! I did check with LASAR already. They are usually very helpful and are trying to assist but didn't have a immediate solution. Will check with Top Gun.
  20. Thanks for the tips, I'll try both those options! My house is like my airplane, really small but awesome. Thanks!
  21. I have a 1977 M20J model with a Dukes gear motor. I'm looking for a place to get it overhauled, including the brushes, not just the actuator. Having problems finding a place that can overhaul it or that has an overhauled motor for less than the price of my house. The existing motor is model number 1057-00-5G Serial number 0134 It was last overhauled by George's Electrical Service in Sacramento and they just went out of business in Dec. Thanks for any input.
