Cowl vibration / chaffing particles or exhaust soot?
George replied to George's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
No corrosion X and I removed the cowling 35 hours ago...clean cowling and not a lot of leaking oil. I have only owned the aircraft since late December. Headed to maintenance this weekend for tire change and new tailpipe. I will show pics to maintenance and ask about friction tape. -
Flew through some rain showers for the first time the other day. Tying the plane down I noticed the cowling was streaking with some sort of substance as you can see in the pics below. Anyone experienced this before? Exhaust soot? Cowling vibration / chaffing between where the fiberglass cowling and aluminum meet? Thanks Hank

Please do...I may ride by Wilgrove tomorrow and check it out. Thanks Hank

Thanks Zack.. We spent a couple hours with Mark this past week in JNX. I have not been into 8A6 yet..still trying to perfect my landings as well before I attempt the shorter strips...Any hangar space over there?

Thanks..

My boys were renting substandard equipment for $127/hr back in 2016. I sold the idea of aircraft ownership to my wife based on idea that I could operate a nicer/mechanically sound aircraft for less than $127/hr. I purchased a 1964 M20C (35K) and my boys flew it 200hrs in 13 months. I kept every receipt related to the aircraft.... Insurance Monthly tie down Pre Purchase Inspection / Air fare to inspect aircraft Annual / carburetor O/H Fuel / Oil changes FBO Ramp/custom fees Taxes Total expenses were $18,500 working out to $93/hr. Please note this does not include engine or maintenance reserves....20-25/hr? In my experience it was totally worth the time and effort I spent owning the plane..just hope I have the same experience with our newer J model!! Hope this helps. Hank

Thanks Mark... Would like to take you up on the offer! My oldest is at NCSU. My other at VT headed back on the 22nd. Let me know when you would have some time..I will see if I can make the schedules work. Hank

Hi All, My two oldest boys are having a tough time with Mooney landings. I have plenty of C time from way back and little J time starting about a month ago. I was never an instructor and can hold my own on landings but I am having a hard time passing on what seems to work for me to the boys! Anyhow... the boys have asked if there might be any instructors in the NC area that could work with them? Thanks, Hank

Hi All.. Small area of hangar rash right tip of my elevator. The paint has chipped off in this area and is about the size of a quarter. It appears there is the beginning of some surface corrosion on the bare aluminum. What is the best way to handle/fix this area of concern? Added the Pic below... Thanks for all the suggestions Hank

Thx..New bulb on the way>> Hank

Hi All, I want to replace the halogen bulb with LED. Is this the correct LED replacement for a 83 M20J? Parmetheus Plus PAR36 LED Part # 11-12976 Thx Hank

Hi Charlie, I have 64 M20C in the Charlotte area. I might be able to make it to Wilmington this weekend if the weather cooperates. Its manual gear and flaps. Planning on putting it on the market in the Fall. Be glad to show it to you. Hank tealsafety@gmail.com

It does not rise...we'll give it a try tomorrow. Any hints on the procedure or is it a matter of increasing idle mixture until we get the tach rise? Thanks GHW
-
New Tempest (not fine wire) plugs about a month ago maybe 30 hours on them. Cleaned a few weeks ago prior to carb overhaul. I do lean after engine start. I may need to look at the idle mixture as I do not get a tach rise when I pull the mixture to cut off as described by Clarence above. Thanks HW

Presumably.... will be checking today when I go pay for the labor...ugh!

So I fixed our rough engine operation with overhauled carb but now the engine coughs at first application of power on take off roll. We do not jam the throttle forward.. it is a smooth slow advancement of the throttle. Timing was ok when we (maint.) were trying to diagnose the rough engine prior to overhauled carb installation. What might we be looking at to cure the cough?? Thanks GHW

Update rough engine....tried it all.. Inspected: fuel lines, gascolator / carb fuel line screens, mags, plugs / leads, muffler baffle blockage, compressions, intakes for leaks.... Turns out the card was running lean. Local shop suggested sending to Burlington, NC for evaluation. Confirmed running lean so I now have overhauled carb on the engine and is running great. FYI carb had accumulated 1000 hrs and was last overhauled in 2003. Thanks to all for help and suggestions. GHW

I'm going to check that fuel line..still having issue..engine seems to be running lean before I touch mixture. thanks GHW

I feel the engine is running on the lean side w/o leaning. Flew yesterday and the GEM was indicating the EGTs graphs already in the area of peak EGT and I had not even touched the mixture control. A&P checked for induction leaks (visually and carb cleaner sprayed near induction potential leak areas) non found. All cylinder EGTs rising pretty close together. All plugs firing after checking with GEM. Each cylinder had about 50-75 rise in temp when operating on either L or R mag. Slick mags Fuel injector would only be on IO360...correct? Thanks for thoughts.. GHW

Do not remember...will advise during annual.. Thanks

Attitude Indicator / Suction Gauge

No prop balance since overhaul 2006 (Hartzell) LOP...well that's another issue I need to figure out...Engine seems to already be running lean without leaning..GEM 602 showing temps on all cylinders above asterisk on GEM and have not even touched mixture. Yesterday at 3000ft 23/2300 FF was 9.6 w/o leaning. Manual indicates FF around 10 at 2500ft. Annual in February...have them look at mounts... Thanks GHW -

Purchased overhauled RCA 22-7 A/I unit from source in ICT. I still had some issues with the new overhauled.. After adjusting the artificial plane in level flight the would A/I show a climb in a descent and vice versa. In addition the "gyro horizon" in the unit vibrates to the point of making the display blurry. Spoke with the folks in ICT and the built another one for me and we exchanged units again. And now the recently exchanged unit after about 15 hours of operation is displaying the same problems as the unit we exchanged mid November. -Suction in green -Vacuum filter changed with original exchange unit mid November. Might we be doing something wrong in the installation...not much to it or is there? Too much aircraft vibration?...seems to be about normal..only have about 60 hours in this plane since purchase. Or did I get two overhauled lemons from ICT? Thanks again for inputs GHW .
