What is this?

While digging through the seat-back pockets on my 1977 M20J, I found this curious item. It looks like it may be made of vinyl and looks about as dated as the airplane, but I cannot figure out what it is for. Hoping one of you will be able to solve the mystery. It may not have ever been part of the airplane.

You want to keep it, it holds the fuel caps to the wing. I just replaced mine on a M20 S and its now made out of mono-filiment fishing line. It costs about $30.00 for 4" of line??

Will do. I've only got he one and pretty well used to using without the lanyard. Thanks all for solving the mystery. Dave C
