First time poster.....longtime lurker. My question is about mixture. The aircraft I fly is based at a airport with a elevation of 3000'. I just purchased some block time from a friend that owns the plane. The model is a M20E with the IO-360. I have lots of right time seat but now moving into the left seat. As per insurance requirements, I am doing some dual time with a instructor. As this is the first time I have really had control of all of the aircraft systems I have a question about the mixture settings. On the ground I lean aggressively as the airport is 3000' With the engine full rich and the throttle pulled all the way back, the engine will stop. During the first flight out with the instructor, I come in for a landing. On the approach, full rich, throttle back. On touchdown, the engine quits. Get the airplane back running,, take off. Before takeoff though, I set the throttle at 1000 RPM and start to lean. The RPM goes up about 400 RPM just leaning on the ground. But if you give it some more power it does start to cough.
My flight instructor that I have hired will not fly with me until I get the airplane fixed as he thinks there is something seriously wrong. He has spoken with mechanics who say there is something wrong with the carb. Didn't know the M20E had a carb! The plane just came out of annual with no problems. My friend and owner of the mooney has spoken with other pilots who say this is normal as the plane is set-up for sea level. At this point I don't know what to do. The instructor is the only independent instructor around. If there is something wrong with the plane, we would get it fixed. But if this is normal how do I tell this guy. I guess we can set it up for 3000' then switch it back once my flight training is finished.
