  1. Yep all true- PIC is PIC...Check lists are a must. We all can get complacent at times, and that is when you get bit. Even after 1010 times the door was closed and latch correctly, one distraction is all it takes. The reality is during warm summer days the cabin door can be opened and closed several times during ground operations. Good communication is important. In my line of work, the captain is the captain, however when the other member says "check" then the captain most likely trusts it. My story was reality - detailing there was no way my M20C door can be closed in flight without maybe sever slips at low airspeed. Even then, I don't think 'my door' would close. If the door opens, just fly the pattern and land. Your Mooney will fly just fine around the patch. And if you do have an open door, sunny days would be preferred over dark rainy nights....
  2. My to cents....M20C, my passenger who was familiar in the door operations, did not latch it correctly 'this' flight. At 50' or so they notice (with an excited voice and demeanor) the door top was about 1'to 2" open. I raised the gear and told TWR I was returning - open cabin door. I didn't work the door inflight, I flew the plane normally except a bit slower than normal. I had my passenger fully release (open) it to stop the bending moment of the door frame. They then tried to re-close the door on downwind about 90mph (cabin vents open). No way...that door was going to stay open. Landed normally. I then gave my passenger a grumpy/WTF look and said " when you told me that you checked the door I believed you..." "Pay attention and stop looking at the damn phone. People have died with open doors in flight. This serious sh t. Pay attention!". I created a small passenger checklist (dash Placard) for them to complete: 1. Door latch - push top and bottom 2. Seat belts latch and secure - pull on the belt strap near latch 3. Seat pins lock in a hole - push-pull-rock seat back and forth. 4. PUT your PHONE AWAY for Take-Off and Landings >great forum< T
  3. NEWs: Multiple issues are causing my side tone static. The KAM24 is faulty causing intermittent radio issues (GNS530 and Ky196) transmission garbled. The intercom (Sigtronis SPA-400) is also failing causing static in the side tones. I also have a bad try connector to my KMA24 causing an intermittent xmit failure on my GNS530. I have replaced my KMA24 and intercom module, however I have not yet dived into replacing that tray connector. I am not sure how to do that...no room - access is made for a mouse. What fun....
  4. Excellent _ thanks you!
  5. I am getting noise in my Comms XMIT only...As received by ATC.
  6. My M20C has an external AUX Power receptacle on the cowl just below the battery. It has been disconnected. By the batter is a solenoid that also has no wires to it. I have looked through my wiring schematics for this installation- not to be found. Does anyone have a M20C aux power wiring diagram and parts? Having an AUX power input would help me solve my other electrical / comms issues... thanks
  7. The next step is to plug in my Fluke MM (Alt output to ground) and see it there is any AC signals. My Fluke Mod 87 s/b fast enough to see any transients. Coming off the BUS would work as well. TBD.... Any advice is well received.
  8. I just talked with Harztell tech support - they said no Cap on the Alt output. The install as shown above is correct. The Zeftronics R15300 is the noise filter- it can react fast enough to mitigate it...He didn't know how it all work inside the R15300. cheers
  9. Below is My Alt connections when i bought the airplane No Cap on install. I'll look for a large Cap (in line with output) later tomorrow... ...thoughts on install?
  10. In line or Parallel with the Alt output?
  11. My M20c (new to me) was converted to Zeftronics R15300 and ALY-8520Ls Hartzell alternator. My aircraft has been modified so many times I do not believe the 1962 wiring diagram is relevant for the charging system. Would the Alt/reg conv STC retain said capacitor? My question is - Is there a noise suppressing capacitor in the system? I have heard some older Mooney have them and some didn't... >I am having radio static issues.... >The Zeftronics R15300 and ALY-8520Ls Hartzell alternator were installed in 1999, how ever I replaced them last week due to charging failure. Static issue predates my replacements. > Equipment includes GNS530 and King KY 196. thanks
  12. Right- but it sounds like some of the battery box mounting hardware is thru the firewall...? I'll see the airplane again next week to confirm- but if there is hardware thru the firewall accessing it would be thru the avionics access panels.
  13. Oh, so I pull off the access panels top side in front of the windscreen to access the bolts... I am not at the airplane now, and I am new to working on old Mooney's. Those LH avionics access panels will give me access to the Battery box hardware?
  14. Thanks- I am also doing a Alt (ALY-8520LS replacement and Zeftronics R15300 regulator replacement. When I get my Alt/Reg I'll start the process next week. The BTM cowl will be difficult (R&R) on the ramp alone.... any hints of this process? You top down idea will require a step ladder/stool of sorts.
  15. I just bought my 1962 M20C and now I am starting to get it mechanically up to where i want it. 500 hr mag inspection is due. Left mag removal - looks like the Vac pump and the battery box need to be removed first. Any thought on access? Wow this look tight! And how to get to the oil sump screen? Crazy! Any advice on accessing these items?
