  1. I always try to avoid mountain obscuration when flying a SEP even if there is no ice.
  2. I’m not fully qualified to answer the question of advancing age insurance because I’m 55 and I am only in my first year of insurance. I will however share what I’ve heard for those approaching 80 or even above 80. 1. One insurance company is being sued for age discrimination, so how the issue of age will be handled by the insurers may change in the future. 2. The insurers want to see that you keep flying. If you can show that you continue to fly, they will likely continue to insure you. 3. Get Wings credit every year. If you’re closer to 80, do both Basic and Advanced Wings. I note that some have been asked by insurers to do an IPC, but an IPC can be included in a Wing. I think that the insurers don’t feel comfortable asking us to do Wings, but that is really what they are looking for.
  3. The Malibu is so overshadowed by its turboprop big brothers that it rarely receives mention across the Internet these days. It checks all the boxes that you mentioned. It also has good range, better than the Meridian. The main reason why I don’t go for it is because I’m 6’2” and getting to the pilot seat is a Houdini act for me. I would also not necessarily trust the single piston engine to climb through the ice.
  4. When I started the avionics up this morning, everything moved to Active within two minutes. I spoke with Garmin before going to the plane and they also said to use an SD card. In addition, they said that the databases in Standby will not be able sequence correctly if a GPS signal cannot be detected. I checked the satellites and they were showing, so maybe it was that they were not being picked up last night when I had the problem.
  5. Does anyone have an idea why the databases on for the G1000 are not updating? I can get them into the Standby column. Upon the required restart, the Stanby databases go back to 2022 date. Upon another restart, the Active databases remain not updated.
  6. I’m looking for an A&P who can install a few components in my M20V. I have available a MikroKit landing height sensor with gear sensor and GPS input and an Alpha Eagle AOA with flaps bias and heated probe. Also looking to source and install a Stormscope. Based in HWD, but willing to travel. May be an opportunity for someone to do something a little different. Email me at stephen.deklerk@outlook.com or text 650-823-3835.
  7. In addition to the control/runaway possibilities and the mechanical/jam possibilities that have been mentioned, I also don’t want to discount the possibility of an electrical issue with the wires or the servo motor. The plane had been standing for seven months in Arizona and there were a few electrical issues that worked themselves out when it started to fly again. Thank you everyone for your thoughtful responses.
  8. The trim wheel on the floor refused to move in either direction.
  9. The manual trim was stuck too.
  10. I am going to ask my mechanic about this next week. I didn’t grease the landing but the landing may have degreased the jackscrew!
  11. Thank Skip. I looked at those emergency procedures in the manual and I’ll be more prepared next time. I’ll do a preflight of the GFC 700 next time I fly. There were no messages before I shut down and the landing could have shaken the jam loose.
  12. I had a stuck trim issue today and I can’t figure out what cased it. I have an M20V with G1000NXi. Everything was working fine with the autopilot. On the LPV approach I tried to capture both VNV and GP. It did not want to capture. When I switched the autopilot off on the G1000, the electronic trim and manual trim were stuck in the full forward position, so I had to pull back on the yoke. I tried to power cycle the autopilot on the toggle switch. Trim still stuck. I did not cycle the flight director and did not pull the autopilot circuit breaker. Used about 20lbs of force in the flare and needless to say the landing was rough. After the landing, the trim was back to working fine. Clearly the servo got stuck. What could have caused it in the first place? And what caused it to become unstuck? What is the fix?
