  1. I have done exactly that. His opinion is that I should pass. He has others with more issues that have passed. And right now, I am doing well. But heck, there just aren’t any guarantees. My decision right now is to go for it. But I’m putting the AME with my cardiologist to gather information that we know the FAA will require. They just took an outrageous quantity of blood for testing including tests at the Cleveland Clinic (gold standard of heart institutes). My AME and my cardiologist will both advocate for me. I mainly raised this question for others in a similar situation. TBH, if I were in Europe, I’d buy a JMB vl3 and be a happy camper.
  2. And that is my dilemma. Do I satisfy my desire to fly with a sports license and aircraft or do I roll the dice on getting my 3rd class medical?
  3. Thank you for all the replies on my previous Insurance Question post. Very helpful. Now I have another issue that might hold relevance to others. you can get a sports license to fly with NO medical. You are limited to LSA ( light sport aircraft) and the requirements/training are much cheaper and easier. You most likely are aware. This would be an easy route for me to get back to flying. It could be way more convenient and cheaper. For one thing, I could land next to my house and build my own hanger. Heck, I’m considering buying an LSA and a hanger just to fly to my airport which is about 45 minutes away. Here is the rub. If I apply for the 3rd class medical and get denied, I will NOT be eligible for a sports license. This is causing me a lot of heart burn. Before I get that med express number, I have to decide. Steve
  4. True on using acronyms. CHD is coronary heart disease. The LTA was less relevant to the question but I should be less lazy about how I post. Something about tapping on the iPad…I tend to abbreviate. The 3rd class medical issue is based on a 10 year timeline. I’m well past that so my only option is to go with a 3rd class. It will be a painful process with no guarantees. There is also an issue that I’ll put up in a 2nd post. BTW…i have never had a heart attack even though i have had 99% blockage of my LAD…also known as rhe widow maker.
  5. Hmm, you might know Mike Bauwens. Good friend. Mine is a 60k racer. l’ll have to jump through hoops on a yearly basis most likely. If I can get on the basic med program I will do that. Called Avemco today and was surprised that they give me good credit for my past Mooney time. I’m planning to start instrument training so they like that. If I stay with a 201, I’ll get covered.
  6. Yes, I was aware as I have read a bunch of the threads here. More an attempt at a humorous reply to the idea I might have to settle for a J.
  7. Truth…
  8. thanks Parker, we are going to proceed on the medical front quickly. This is the make or break deal. Insurance, well the question is more if and under what requirements. I have a pretty good tolerance for costs. I might actually consider Rmags project Mooney. OMG what a nice one. I did say I’d like an Ovation but my main criteria is I need a plane that is solid. I don’t need a project. Thanks for responding.
  9. Fix wing time..250. LTA..1500 Never any insurance claims and have actually never carried hull in my hab.
  10. Yep, LTA…I’m a hot air balloon pilot.
  11. Yes, I only need my statement that I can operate the balloon. No medical. My doc says it will be a process. We are going to put together, with my cardiologist, my history. Other that the CHD, I have no medical issues. But it is a hurdle. Doc says 2 months (a miracle) to maybe 6. And yes, it will take yearly updates. I am a stubborn SOB so it is what it is.
  12. I’m almost 72 and have a past history of CHD complete with triple bypass 2 plus years ago. Yesterday I talked to my doctor/ame about getting my 3rd class medical. He’s optimistic but no guarantees. I have had a LTA license for 45 years and in 1983 got my sel. My plane was a 1980 201. TBH I was looking for a V35 Bonanza but fortunately found the Mooney and loved it. I ended up selling it in 1987 because…. I’m still actively flying LTA but want to get another plane. I want an Ovation. I have a friend to train me and give me a FR. my question is, should I call an insurance agent and ask what it would take to insure me? Open to suggestions here but I figure I best find out this question early. I am truly enjoying Mooneyspace. You guys can be entertaining but I have already learned so much. Thanks for that. Steve
