I leave mine connected to a battery minder any time it’s in my hangar.  It’s wired to their special connector, connected directly to the battery.  The connector is run into the baggage area near the hatch so it’s easy to hook up.  Never had an issue.

What did the lights on the minder show when you hooked it up?  It gives you a basic indication.  Also, -27 amps sounds like it wasn’t charging… like your alternator wasn’t on yet?

same for 5 years, no issues, battery always healthy and ready

  2. Aft bulkhead for McCauley spinner, little did I know when I was redoing the prop, that it was attached to a non existent bulkhead, I had no idea there were so many aviation scrapyards in America, I think I've spoken to everyone. I have seen this posted on before, but a couple things have changed. The Mooney part is no longer available , apparently a company called Globe used to make then but no more. They are non existent at the scrapyards,  the option is to repair, the warning is they are lasting 10 hours after welding. The next option is the very nice Hartzell composite kit, but you need a Hartzell prop for that which I don't have, so word of warning before redoing a McCauley for a Mooney J , look to trade in  and get the Hartzell with the new kit.

Ill end up selling my McCauley with 150 hours and installing a new Hartzell just to get a 12 oz piece of aluminum replaced, costly ......   anyone with any other ideas I'd love to hear.

  3. Thought I had posted update,  second servo replaced , and thus far about 10 hours in no issues.

Servo was bad, replaced with a new one, that one was bad as well ( seems odd ) avionics sad they often use refurbished servos for warranty parts. This time avionics insisted on replacing it with brand new servo. My gut tells me this servos are underpowered and we will see failures between 200-300 hours. I hope I'm wrong and this is behind me, it cost me the whole summer of flying and several trips cancelled.

hoping this is behind me,  grateful for my Avionics man

Garmin should be able to tell what the fault is from data logs.  In my case, I was having the same failure modes due to YD disconnects... Still not fully resolved.  Are you flying a long body?

Sorry, for slow response , no it’s a J , servo replaced but issues still exists , Garmin has had file for over a week, I think the servos are under powered I hope I’m wrong. 2 months with this issue

  5. Update , before this AP problem , I had about 200 hrs on the system prior to this issue. Garmin did replace the servo. I flew it less than an hour without issue , plane went into annual ,  first flight after annual  the issues reappeared, Garmin requested a second data card reading , I sent it in last week and am waiting to here. It’s a bummer

I will be working through this with Garmin and avionics shop but wanted to post here to get and give info.

Normal IFR refresher training and AP kept disconnecting in level flight, as much as 10x on a 2 hr flight. I did receive the red PIT error on G5 and G3.  To be fair we were working through lots of VNAV scenarios, so I wanted to contribute it to not clearing flight plans or having incorrect one loaded , I don’t think that was it though. Though CFII confirmed several disconnections were just smooth and level. Though it was disconcerting it was a reminder to keep hand skills fresh not IMC approaches in this  event. I’ll post updates but any feed back or experience with other GFC owners would be great.

    Thanks

Ran about 3 hours with SD card and sent in for data, it seems to be pointing to the pitch trim servo, the whole system is less than 2 years old , so it will be interesting to see what they come up with B2FC9AB6-5DB3-4E86-9546-733FAF303763.thumb.jpeg.bbe8567cf67b8abc2c948b5a34b70712.jpegA364A8BA-BE86-46C5-BCA2-28C5D4831236.thumb.jpeg.6b0094b71789b420062238486347cb28.jpeg

Keep a data card in the G5 so Garmin can evaluate the data.  4 ways to disco AP. 1. AP disco on yoke 2. On GFC507 3. breaker, and 4 by engaging elec. trim. Your issue Is pitch servo or the elec. Trim Switch giving you issues.

thank you , i wasn't aware of the option for the mini SD, it may in fact have on  in it, will verify soon , if not have ordered one,  I bet your diagnoses is correct on 1-4  thank you for taking the time to respond!!

Med body J-  here is what the Avionics shop suggested today

    Good Morning Chan,

I have had some issues where the ap will disconnect now and then. I have replaced a yaw servo that was doing that. What I found when flying was that I would get a yaw light on my G5 and G3 on the V35 which then the ap would disconnect. I watched it happen a few times and that was my only light before disconnect. That being said I suspect maybe the pitch trim servo is seeing a fault or has one. What we can do is download data off the G5. If you have a small sd card that you can put in the G5 and just fly it some with it in then I can download that file n send to Garmin. If you don’t have a micro sd card let me know I can ship you one. Its like a 16g micro card.

    Thank you

    Bill

Ive ordered the mini SD- Ill fly this week and send the card in for evaluation

  11. over a belly wash from a long cross country and a bunch of landings, i noticed landing fairings, the stationary pieces #30 on the illustration i attached , is this an easy to source replacement item? Not listed on Lasar, and I dont see any used ones, is it time to start mastering fiberglass repair?   One screw hole is starting to show some weakness on the cowling.

Looking for any experience with this , plane is 42 years old

    thanks

Howdy all.  I'm right on the edge of retirement and am planning on saying 'adios' to California.  Florida is interesting to me for the warm weather and lifestyle.

I'd considered the panhandle area / Pensacola but the MOA's and restricted areas look like a lot of inconvenience and make it a challenge to fly along the coast line.  Anyone have recommendations?  Ideally not far from the coast as I like diving and live now <3 miles from the beach.  Budget is about $300k I guess, but the one caveat is I want/need a hangar for my J.

Surfing the web I came across a site for Venice.  OTOH, when talking to my son, he described it as a dump based on the gouge from a fellow aviator.   That might also mean happy hour ended early :)

    Anyone?

I built a house in Venice last year , still live in Indiana most of the time , I love Venice Airport , long wait for hangar though . Venice is really cool def not a dump , not gonna get much for 300 k there though . message me if you want more info, I dive too but it’s sucks all along there , Venice is only a 45 -50 min flight to Key West I hear good diving

You should probably see weather and traffic on the g3x too from the adsb, does that work?

Found out today from my avionics guy, who isn’t always honest, that the 345 remote transponder does not have a patch from Garmin. He said I should expect it in September, has anyone else heard this?

Do yourself a favor, get the ADSB traffic and weather working right first before throwing money at XM weather.  Try it for a while.  If you don’t like the free weather, you can always add on XM.  You should not need any new equipment to currently get free weather and traffic.

Good advice though I may have misspoken, ADSB works great on the 750 and I am using it, the issue was no equipment installed will allow me to connect to Sirius and I’m not willing to invest anymore to try it, I’ll look for  a cheaper plug in later.

i did find that had I ordered the 465 rather than the 460 version of the G3X it would have had the link without requiring additional equipment ..

Unfortunately I lack the experience to tell you how traffic and weather from a GTX-345 are connected and/or displayed on a G3x.  I haven't had the pleasure of flying behind that setup.  Hopefully someone else will chime in.

That said, I'd be very surprised if the G3x relies on a wireless Bluetooth connection to the GTX-345 to get FIS-B traffic and weather.  Your G3x is almost certainly hard-wired to the GTX-345, either directly, or indirectly via the GTN-750 and Garmin's "Connext" technology.  If it's not displaying traffic and weather properly, it might be a wiring problem.  But I'd wager it's more likely to be a software configuration issue that can be fixed without digging into the panel again.

I'd start by reading the G3x manuals and following the exact steps they indicate to display FIS-B (not XM) traffic and weather.  Then call or e-mail your avionics shop and specifically tell them, "When I follow the steps in section X.Y.Z of the G3x manual to display FIS-B traffic/weather, I don't see anything".  That will go a long way toward getting their attention, as opposed to being dismissed as pilot error.

As for your question about "upgrading" the G3x to get Sirius weather, that's a no.  There is no version of the G3x that includes an integrated Sirius XM receiver.  A quick search suggests that maybe a GDL-51R would do the trick, and that's a lot less expensive than the GDL-69.  But I don't know if the GDL-51R is certified, and even if it is, the price of the receiver itself doesn't include the antenna and cabling you'd need for it.

    thank you sir

The Garmin GTX-345 Transponder does not include a Sirius XM receiver.  It does include an ADS-B-in receiver that will allow you to receive FIS-B weather, though you may or may not be satisfied with that as a substitute for XM weather (I'll leave that debate to others).  The GTX-345 definitely does not include a Sirius XM music receiver, you'd have to get XM music through a GDL69 or your old GDL39.

Assuming your avionics shop wired and configured the GTX-345/GTN-750 interface correctly, you should be able to see FIS-B weather on the GTN-750 in several ways, most notably by selecting the "Weather" button from the home page.

Vance thank you,  yes I can see the Fis- B weather on the 75O  but cannot on the G3x, is that just because the remote transponder is not connected through Blue tooth? The remote transponder and audio panel were not in the plan originally, a miscalculation on panel layout forced it,

I was surprised in a long flight yesterday not to see traffic or weather on the G3x

  18. Sorry if repeat,

I have a new panel and was expecting to easily load Sirius XM,  When looking into the G3X i found that I needed the GDU 465 not the 460 I have, so I know I control it through the GTN 750 but do I still need a GDL to receive, does my signal come through the new transponder 345?

After lugging around the GDL 39 i thought this would be seamless, my avionics upgrade was rough, ive put a call back in , but no answer .

Will I need another reciever to get XM weather ? or surely its 60 k in new Garmin equip, there is a way right?
