  1. Hey everyone quick update, I cleaned the engine again, ran it on the ramp at mid RPM settings to try and discover the leak. I used a UV light and I believe I located the culprit. It appears to be the bottom portion of the right mag gasket. It leaks out of the bottom and then leaks down the governor and so forth (picture shows collection on bottom of governor mounting pad). I have my A&P looking/fixing it this week. I will update you all if that was not the issue. Fingers crossed!
  2. Hello, I fly a M20E and I have an oil leak on the back of my engine. It runs down the rear interior cowling and down covering the front gear as all Mooney oil leaks do. I have somewhat located the general area of the leak through cleaning the engine and running it. But, I am not super engine savvy so I was hoping that someone could point me in a more accurate direction. I know it could be a vacuum pump, rear mounted governor, or magneto leak from what I have researched. I think it originates above the governor though. The oil filter is tight and so are the return lines. The leak runs down and covers the exhaust manifold and the orange and black lines in this photo. It seems to equate to a loss of about 1 quart every 4 hours. Here are some photos of the leak thus far (seems to come from high rear).
  3. Hello, I have a 1965 M20E and it has been dripping old black oil down the two front corners of the front gear door. Two oil changes ago I carelessly let a bit of oil from the oil filter spill down and I figure maybe that is all it is, but that was months and many flight hours ago. Any ideas on where this somewhat steady stream of black oil is coming from would be appreciated. I have linked a photo.
  4. Hello, I have owned my 1965 M20E for almost a year now. I recently had the nose tire field replaced which I think may have something to do with it. The issue is that I have recently been hearing a rattling type noise from in front of me as I am sitting on the ground. It does not occur when I startup, taxi and takeoff; but rather once I am powering to idle for the round out, or on the ground taxiing for shutdown. It does not matter if the airplane is moving or stationary, the noise still happens. It occurs right at 1100 RPM thru about 1300RPM or when the engine noise is so loud that it covers it up. Any ideas on what it could be would be appreciated!
  5. Hey All, I have a FreeFlight FDL-978-XVR, and have flown hundreds of hours with no issue. But this past flight I got a “GPS FAULT” message from it and I couldn’t get good position info from it on ForeFlight. Yes I’ve tried turning it on and off many times. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions, I have left a message with FreeFlight. Thanks!
  6. Hello, I have a question regarding two pilots, Pilot A who flies under the hood, and Pilot B who is Safety Pilot. According to the FAA Hicks Letter, Pilot B can be made in charge of safety of flight to log the entire flight as PIC time; but my question is, if Pilot B is 'acting PIC' and Pilot A is the 'sole manipulator of the controls' during the entire flight then is the 0.2 of every flight able to be logged by Pilot A per FAR 61.51? To further clarify, once the hood is taken off for landing or takeoff, but Pilot A is still the sole manipulator of the controls, does this count to log as PIC time? Also, if Pilot B is Safety Pilot and "acting PIC", who logs the X/C time in reference to FAR 61.65(d)? Thank you! (The referenced 0.2 being Takeoff and Landing out of a 1.0 total flight time).
  7. Hello, I am based in the coldest city in the continental US, Grand Forks N.D. I have a 1965 M20E and I am looking for tips to prevent shock cooling, preheating practices, and lowest CHT temperatures. I utilize the crazy low GPH at 17in MP to time build but it comes with slightly cooler CHT's I have noticed. Right now, I have a freshly installed EZ Heat Oil Sump heating pad to help aid my heater that blows into the cowl flap, and I use blankets over the engine as well. My usual CHT's aloft are 278F-335F at 17in MP & 2400 RPM. I typically max out my cooling on descent to no more than 18 degrees F per minute as well. Any help is appreciated!
