Dear Philip,

Jacques just called me and explained the possibility that you might be able to help us with the electric motor.

That would be great. Our Mooney is currently grounded in the Czech Republic because we do not have a cowl flaps motor. Today my Czech technician is trying to overhaul the existing motor, but apparently it is not easy. I'm not sure abouit the result!

If it is possible to find another one in the

USA, it would be great.

The exact specifications of the motor are as follows:

P/N: 880050-513 (M409M498)

Manufacturer: Globe Motor

Please note that this is the 24V version (!)

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards,

Roberto

I think Byron had one @jetdriven

At this point, it’s Byron, salvage yards or find a helpful small motor shop.

Fix the cowl flaps full open and fly the plane until the replacement is ready. A few knots slower but no big deal. This was my MSC solution a couple years ago.

No need to be AOG for this.

If the cowl flaps are fixed in an open position, does the operating limitation not apply?

The limitation was arguably intened to avoid take-offs and climb with closed cowl flaps and rather poorly worded. My guess is that fixing the flaps in open position would be adequate solution for flight to home base instead of grounding the aircraft in a location where parts and services may be difficult to obtain.

Yuup.  If there was ever a "don't ask, don't tell" harmless situation, this would be it!

My F has a speed limitation of 130kts for open cowl flaps, not sure if later models have a speed limitation?

I haven’t seen a speed limitation for open cowl flaps in my J. The flight manual anticipates having them open in cruise if needed

called Lasar about three weeks ago inquiring if they were taking deposits for a batch order, no joy, if anybody has an idea how and where to get some of these made, I go in on the order, mine is working for the time being, but 26 years old, appears there are none to be had right now

looks like it, but not sure if he really wants to sell it, he runs a shop and may want to keep it on his shelf for one of his customers

As a group we’ll eventually need to find a solution for this.  It looks like the J and K cowl flap motors are the same (or very close).  They don’t fail often, but they also aren’t available if they do fail.  It would be great if we had an FAA approved shop that would fix motors like this - there use to be a guy in Sacramento. I think the more likely scenario is to find a local shop that would be willing to fix it and an A&P willing to “supervise” the repair.  If tge gearing is broken, then we would also need a machine shop capable of replacing gears.  While it’s not simple to find the correct people to do this stuff, it’s not impossible, and the part isn’t so critical that people are going to be really worried (like maybe a gear motor).

However, it would be great if Lasar or a Mooney group could purchase say 5-10 new motors through Allied Motors (who bought globe) and keep them in stock.  Although I think the purchase price and long return timeline would be problematic.

Will contact globe next week, going to be a tedious process, gut feel there is a need for 5-10 of them per year, the newest ones are 20 years old

According to the IPCs, both the M20J and M20K used either of two 28V motors, and the IPC notes say either will work:

880050-501 (1 RPM)

880050-505 (4 RPM)

There is also a 880050-509 14V motor for retrofitting older airplanes from manual to electric cowl flaps.

Byron's picture shows a 880050-505. There has been some discussion about this version allowing the cowl flaps to creep open if the switch is placed in the center off position rather than left in the close position.

There are also up/down limit switches in there that control power to the motor (along with the switch itself), however I would think that they are available from the electronic warehouses.  At least the flap limit switches were when I needed one last summer.
