Curious what the replacement procedure is like for the 28V wingtip recognition LED lights (replacing the old, hot halogens) on a Mooney Ovation. The wingtips need to come off (i.e. rivets drilled out) to connect the new wiring, or is it simpler?

Thanks.

I’ve done a few installs on Ovations, and it’s simpler…no need to remove the wingtips.  You’d order the OR650E red and green/anti-collision lights (L and R), the OR500 nav/position/ACL (tail), remove the HDACF power supply in the tail, and install the new lights using existing wiring.  You’d likely need to run another single wire if you want synchronization between them, and isn’t difficult at all.  The Whelen/WAT installation docs show what needs to connect where.  PM me if you want additional details.

I was referring to replacing the hot, lens-melting halogen recognition lights (only) with the LED ones--no plans right now to replace the nav lights or strobes. Is it the same case for those--no need to remove the wingtips?

Jeff, I don't have direct experience replacing them but I had a hand (along with Mooneyspacer help) in getting that LED recog light developed. Feedback from the field is that it is easy. The wiring is non-polarity sensitive so just hook up the two wires and off you go. Bottom line is not a big deal. If your lenses are melted, I now carry those too on the shelf.

Cannot speak for Ovation with absolute certainty, but it took me about 1 hour to change these on my 1990 Bravo. It is my understanding that the factory wintips are the same on both models. Wingtips do not have to come off, just the front lens. The LED lights fit perfectly in the existing brackets and you just connect 2 wires. After changing to LEDs, I am no longer concerned about melting lenses when using recog lights.

Replacing the strobes and nav lights was just a bit more involved as it required rmoval of the poswer suplies for the strobes, but it also did not require removal of wingtips.
