http://www.controller.com/listingsdetail/aircraft-for-sale/MOONEY-M20K-231/1979-MOONEY-M20K-231/1157571.htm

I really like this one, though I called and got some details.  NDH verified, but very basic Mooney.  No hot prop, no intercooler, no auto wastegate, no speedbrakes, no O2.  Basic avionics and an engine at TBO.  They are asking $79k.  Did some prelim research on Overhauls on a 360-LB.  Around $40k I think. (any ideas there?)  So total is $119...whew.  There are others for sale with all the above listed and halfway to TBO for much less.  This is some tough research.

Pricing seems to be an art.  Not having acess to vref either makes it tough too.

As a side note, I'm trying to develop my own 'hooterized' vref guide to the Ks with some good numbers to hang your hat on.  Hopefully it will help seperate the good deals and the overpriced ponys.

Hi Buster,

Vref put the price at $51,898 for the aircraft.  I did a quick lookup via AOPA and plugged in what I thought matched from the ad (off course there may be more to what is listed based on your conversation with the owner).  $39 for the year membership at AOPA might be a good investment just for the Vref access.  I used it extensively in my search for an E model, which I was able to find and Vref was dead on for the price I was able to get.

I agree with Brian.  That seller has a vintage plane and hasn't kept it up with the times, and is trying to fetch a price he might have gotten 3+ years ago, but not today.  I'd also recommend joining MAPA and AOPA...both are nominal fees that will open up all kinds of benefits while shopping/owning, plus two great magazines each month.

Just signed up for AOPA.  Was a member about 10 yrs ago...what a great org, they've come a long way since then.

Yeah, $51k on the Vref...wow.  Wonder if the sellers know they are waaaaay off the mark?  I did a few others that I have been looking at and they all came out close (but slightly under) asking price.  Thanks for the help guys!

I bought my J last October and go a smoking deal in my opinion. It needed to be sold and I was able to get a new interior, STEC 30 with alt and a 430W for just 5k over what he was originaly asking with a ratty interior and no radios or A/P. I just pulled up V REF and it is showing to be worth 13k MORE than I paid for it. I am pleasantly surprised to say the least...

Just out of curiosity does anybody know what Vref says mine is worth these days.

Excuse me while i cry a little...LOL

Thanks much. Guess the plane is like my sports cars. I have a LOT more into them than they are worth.

But as i do not plan on ever selling my beloved Mooney or my cars i guess i am OK with it.

Taken in May at LAL. She's all cleaned up and looking fine.

Would have been an interesting civilian product if the USAF had gone for it. Underpowered and not responsive enough for the AF test pilots, however. Their final choice didn't work out real well.

That whole Slingsby debacle sure makes me angry as an airplane nut and a taxpayer.  The USAF sure bungled that from start to finish, and it was a shame to destroy them when they performed fine for normal GA purposes.  Perhaps the AT fitted with a big engine would have carried the day...oh well.

Actually it wasn't as much the Air Force as it was the Clinton White House doing a deal with England. The Siai Marchetti SF-260, IIRC, came in first. I've actually got the test reports somewhere.

Mooney should have gotten the contract!
