Hey everyone,

Just recently purchased a 2007 Acclaim S and while it has been a blast to fly i would love to get the 310 STC to make the takeoff roll shorter. Does anyone know a shop that has done the STC and been able to properly upgrade the g1000's so i dont need to add the redundant tac.

Thanks.

Paging @exM20K

Welcome to Mooneyspace! Dan (exM20K) has the 310hp on his Acclaim and should be able to provide some info.

Just a bit of trivia - the first Acclaim Type S (serial number 31-0100) was delivered in 2008, although some of the earlier Acclaims have had some of the speed mods added. The Type S did come with a few extras also, none of them were delivered without WAAS, they all had 4 Bose jacks, 12v power outlet in the back. Below is a video of the owner taking delivery of the first Type S:

We have done a couple of conversions.

The RPM gauge is optional:

2.7 Tachometer:
Optional:
Electronics International Inc. tachometer, P/N R-1-6-G30R250, J. P Instruments Slimline
Tachometer or TSO tachometers approved as primary instrument may be used in this
installation. Tachometer must be in view of the pilot and co-pilots seating position.

Note: The Garmin G1000 or later version cannot be updated for this STC at this time. If the
Garmin RPM sensor is left installed, the RPM display will flash RED when exceeding 2500 RPM.
Option, disconnect the sensor at the magneto.

Same for the MAP:

2.8 Manifold Pressure Gauge:
Optional Electronics International Inc manifold pressure gauge, P/N M-1-34 must be in
view of the Pilot and co-pilots seating position.
Optional Manifold Pressure Gauge Marking and or light indicator:
 Red line at 34 In. Hg
 Maximum Manifold Air Pressure In. Hg
With Optional MAP Gauge…………….….…. 34
Without Supplemental MAP Gauge……....… 33.5

I had mine done at JA Aircenter at KARR in 2017.  Dunno where you are, though, but any good CMI-experienced shop should be able to do it.

I have the JPI slim-line tach, and it is unobtrusive.  JA is a big Garmin shop, and at the time, I believe it was not possible to change the redline on the G1000 indicator.

The *most* important part of the installation is to get the fuel system set up right.  When it is, it runs like a swiss watch.  When it is not, it will give you fits.

Note the two entries for the TSIO550G in the attached.  Use the top one.

I find the flashing red indicator on takeoff to be a real conversation-starter for new passengers.

I've heard that it's possible to avoid an extra tach by selecting "Ovation 3" in the G1000 software which sets the tach for a redline of 2700 rpm and I've heard that it retains the TIT since the Garmin EIS "sees" it there.

Also I heard this morning that Bob Minnis the individual who came up with this STC has sold the Acclaim 310hp to Don Maxwell Aviation. (Mooney stills owns the 310hp for the Ovation.)

Awesome thanks for the information everyone. I am based in the Portland OR area but would be willing to fly to a shop with experience doing the STC so might give Don a call.

Troutdale MSC should be able to do it for you, not complicated. I had an Ovation converted from 280 to 310hp ten years ago and watched Brian Kendrick do it. He took the prop governor off and I took it over to the prop shop to have the mod done on it to go to 2700 rpm. The only thing that took time was the week for the prop shop to get the governor done.

The fuel set-up is where you need the expertise but @exM20K already gave you the numbers there. If the shop goes on the high end of that you should be fine.

Brian Kendrick did my WASS upgrade about 8 yrs. ago in my Ovation with the 310 hp and switched the settings in my G1000 software to the Ovation 3 which gave me 2700 RPM’s and allowed me to remove my digital tach.

That’s exactly how mine was setup originally. But lost the TIT in the Ovation software. My current guy was able to change the parameters in the Acclaim software to give me 2700RPM.

I did the 310STC on my Acclaim.  Honestly it’s incredible at 280hp.  It burns more gas and doesn’t give you anything at cruise.  I have had the plane into 1800’ one time and glad I had the extra power.  I wouldn’t spend the money again.  I don’t have the second tach and thanks to a savvy IA I have 2700RPM loaded.

Just how much performance are we talking about? Does anyone have pre/post numbers for the STC to compare?

I don't have hard numbers, and it's been a long time since my plane had the STC applied.

The difference is t/o and climb, and it is significant.

I operate off a short (2550x30) strip half the time and fly my 740NM 90% trip usually at 16,000 or 17,000 following a 13-1500 FPM 130KIAS cruise climb. The book climb rate looks to be about 1100 fpm average to 17,000 @ 120KIAS.

So for me the difference is significant and the cost insignificant for the benefit gained.

If your mission is big runway, low altitude cruise to another big runway, then maybe not.

Call Greg at Troutdale, he did mine.  Never any complaints about Advanced Aircraft Services, MSC.
