Flyler Posted August 21 Report Posted August 21 My beautiful new bird has a more pointy and fancy looking spinner on it, and came with this old one. Originally I thought it was just a spare, but on closer inspection I now notice a small fracture. Is this something that could be repaired and useful for someone, or is it a "throw away" part? Seems silly to toss the whole thing over that, but I am new to this world of airplanes Quote
Fly Boomer Posted August 21 Report Posted August 21 I don't know what yours is worth, but some new ones can be multiple AMUs. Don't pitch it--Google up "aircraft spinner repair" and get it welded, or sell it in its current condition. Either way, it probably has value. 1 Quote
Flyler Posted August 21 Author Report Posted August 21 Thanks guys. I would post it on the Classifieds section here, but I don't have a part number, and am not sure what models/props it would fit on. Perhaps someone could help with that too? It has the tail number of the aircraft (my aircraft) on it, and my plane is a 1968 M20F. My prop is a Hartzel HC-C2YK-1BF. I'm not sure if the prop was changed before or after the spinner though. Perhaps my A&P knows, he's the one that installed it back in 2006. Quote

MikeOH Posted August 21 Report Posted August 21 FWIW, I had this happen to my spinner and had it welded. It then cracked again but stopped at the screw hole; IA had no issue signing off at annual. Pretty much proved that drill stopping works 1 1 Quote
Igor_U Posted August 21 Report Posted August 21 This looks like a Hartzell spinner. IIRC two cracks are allowed if are stopped drilled or end in a screw hole. years ago I had no problem pass inspection by a Prop shop A until third crack appeared. Recently someone posted a link or two about shop repairing cracks by welding. Do a search and you should be able to find it. Good luck. Quote
A64Pilot Posted August 21 Report Posted August 21 Many manufacturers like Hartzell don’t allow weld repairs. But spinners have been weld repaired successfully forever. Sometimes the FAA will take the position that a repair can’t be made unless the repair is specifically called out in the manufacturers manual. So as usual along with everything else it’s not real clear and is subject to interpretation. I’ve only glanced at the attached Doc not read it but think I know how it’s going to end Quote

N204TA Posted August 21 Report Posted August 21 The old spinner on my ‘68 F was polished but, otherwise, appears to be the same. I put it on eBay and sold it fairly quickly. I will bring this up with my A&P as we he knows the plane very well (I got really lucky, A&P has known the plane for 20+ years) so we can be certain of the part number. I am not sure if you are new to aircraft ownership, but you should have a separate propeller log for your complex propeller, It should show all work done to your prop over its life. If your A&P changed the spinner at any time after the prop was originally installed, then it should be entered and found in your logs. You may not always have your trusted A&P that "has known the plane for 2+ years" but you should always have your logs. And you should become knowledgeable regarding their history. I bet your A&P does not know off the top of his head and he also finds the answer in the logs.... Just my 2 cents. Quote

I seem to be a perpetual 2 weeks away from my PPL and have been putting off getting more familiar with the Mooney. It's a really hard thing to do. I just don't want to cloud my brain and risk mucking something up on my test. I seem to have the worst luck ever with DPE schedules, rental plane maintenance, and weather. This coming Wednesday is when I am rescheduled but its supposed to rain again Quote
