A friend sent me this link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300355071602&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3ASS%3AUS%3A1123

Because of the price, he wants to go ahead and buy the Mooney and asked if there is a good AME in the Florida area that might be able to do a thorough pre-buy for him. I warned him not to be too quick as M20J's seem to be quite popular and there might be a specific reason why this one has not been taken. With the given specs, the asking price just seems to good be true. I don't want him to get a nasty surprize once the Mooney gets here in South Africa. Does anyone know anything about this aircraft?

Oops, I only followed the link after posting here and saw that there is a reserve on the Mooney. My friend obviously missed this as he just told me that there was a M20J on e-bay for $36100k. Anyway, it looks like a lovely airplane.

Lood,

I think there are two things.

[1] I do not see a set price "buy it now price", just a current bid of $40,300.  There is a note that indicates "reserve not met"  which means that the owner has a set price in mind and won't sell below that price.  I am pretty sure the bid price will rise to meet the market value of an M20J before the reserve is met.

[2] The airframe has 9,325TT.  This has been somebody's work horse.

Do you have better knowlege of the actual price?  If you wan to be aware of the bid activity on ebay, you can find and click on "watch this item" link.  If there is serious activity, you will see the bidding sky rocket towards the last 5 minutes of the auction.

Good luck.

9325 TT?? In Florida? I would be very careful about that. It is pretty, but there could be all sorts of evil lurking under that pretty paint. Could be the deal of the year but I would insist on having the SB done that inspects the steel tubing for corrosion (requires significant removel of interior components).

It is an auction with five days to go. The price could still go much higher before it's done. I didn't see any Buy It Now and it still hasn't made the reserve.

There are lots of great Mooneys for sale right now. I would be very careful of eBay planes when there are so many up for sale without the frenzy of an auction involved. This is a good place to look:

Or Trade-A-Plane. Or contact the big name shops like Lasar or Maxwell and see what they know of. I wouldn't think that shopping for aircraft on a different continent from the one you live on should be done in an hurry.

Just my $0.02 ....

Anthony, I "inked before I thinked" with this one. I only saw the reserve price, etc. after I made the first post. I sent my friend a mail to inform him about this. He's watching it though, but I think it will fetch quite a good price. Even a lowish price in US $ would not be such a bargain anymore once the aircraft had been ferried to South Africa. I opted to do it last year and was quoted R125k ZAR just to ferry it here. If you add that on top of a reasonable selling price in the US, with our exchange rate, it almost always works out cheaper to buy local.

If your friend is serious about it, I will be happy to go and take a look at it. If the plane is in Clearwater FL, I live 10 miles from the airport.

Also,  the A&P that works on my Mooney could give it the once over as well.   I am sure he would charge something, but a quick glance would not be all that expensive.

He would also be a good guy for the prebuy as well.

Lood--

I'd look very closely. Aside from the high time, that aircraft has only been registered to the current owner for a little more than a year. I figure that's about the right amount of time to purchase an aircraft damages in a hurricane and make it serviceable. Don't know that that's what happened, but I have some suspicions, given the location.

Thanks to all for your replies and advice. My thoughts were that it would not sell for under $70k. It is also very nice to know that help is so close at hand when looking at a US Mooney from far away South Africa. I'm actually quite disappointed that this forum was'nt available when I was shopping two years ago.

Airplane is just up the road from me and I actually looked at it quite briefly (My wife's plane used to be based at the same airport).  It was used as a college trainer (accounts for the hight time).  It is a very nice plane with some serious money invested in it, however I did not ever have my A&P look at it, as I decided against it, versus my redo.  The cowl was done at Mooney Mart in Venice, FL (one of the things that scared me), but all looked okay.  It has been for sale for a while and I think that this point a lower offer might actually get accepted.  I am sure  that my A&P (who maintains several Mooney's) would be able to go look at it for you if you wished.  PM me and I'll send you his number or email address if you want (he is a real professional and has maintained my plane for the past three years).  Best of luck.

Parker,

I agree that it is a deal.  It has been for sale for at least 6 months and has had a sign hanging on the bulletin board at KSPG since March/April timeframe.  Originally at $89k, now at 79k, my only guess is that you could buy it for $69k ish.  I have seen it and if I didnt have mine, would consider it.  Still needs WAAS upgrade, new audio panel, etc.  But nevertheless, the Lopresti cowl is worth $15k alone.
