Mag 500 hour shop?

I've got an 87 J with an A3B6 and slick mags. I'm going to replace one mag with a Surefly. For the other, what's the conventional wisdom? I've read a bunch of threads, and it seems like a bunch of people say to just replace slicks, and some folks say IRAN is fine if you send it to the right shop. What shops are people using with good results?  Should I just send it to the shop in Missoula and call it done?  Appreciate any pro tips on this one.

I had great service with this guy.

Personally, I just buy new mags now every 500 hours. I keep one overhauled one on the shelf as a spare. I have had to rely upon O/H it during Covid and the overhauled ones from aircraft magneto service seem to be very good.

New mags run about $2000 each, 500 hour inspections about $400-$500.

I will have 1 inspected when time comes and then do the other one the following year.

Aero Accessories in Van Nuys did an o/h exchange on one of my mags.  The exchange mag they send was faulty and resulted in kickback when I tried to start.  While the shop that installed the mags accepted no responsibility for the obviously split timing on the impulse coupling, Aero Accessories did.  They express shipped my original, now overhauled mag and paid for the kick back inspection, which was non-trivial.

How a shop does when everything is good is fine, but how a shop behaves when things aren’t good says a lot.

My Mag shop said O/H a Bendix because not much had changed, but replace and older Slick due to many upgrades over the years.
O/H’d both Bendix and it wasn’t $400-500 each. It was about $1000 each in February for the O/H. Inflation I guess…?

They sure run smoothly now though.

I've read similar advice, but it seems dated and a log of people are now OK with overhauling the slicks. But what I'd read seemed to be about procedures, not age of the original units. Mine are about 20 years & 1000 hrs since new, and were IRANd 500hrs ago. They're working fine. No issues. Just operating time.  Is the age of the units an issue here, or is that just preference.

its time and hours, corrosion and ozone damage are a big factor. it’s much more costly when you get stranded away from home. But if all your flying is local Bendix mags do go longer than Slick.

Age of the unit only if it hadn’t been upgraded last O/H. I was told several things in the Slicks had been improved but you would not get those in an O/H, you had to get the new Slicks to get those benefits. I don’t have Slicks, so I didn’t pursue it further and don’t know what the changes include.
