Hello to all,

Does anyone know where I can find two serviceable, used Cleveland wheel caps p/n 158-01000? I have already messaged @Alan Fox and Wentworth.

For new ones I've already contacted airpowerinc.com, univair.com & spruce.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I bought mine on eBay ($75 each) but I bet those are long gone, he had old new stock back in November. May try there…

Thanks Don.

Wentworth called an hour ago and had two for $85 each. Can't believe my good luck. Nobody even had new parts in stock and at best it would've been a three to eight week wait, with prices ranging from $400 to $500.

Let me guess, the cotters cut yours

Very good guess. That's definitely what happened to them.

When I was getting my E back in the air there were slight marks on both caps, A&P said he’d seen it multiple times

Just finishing the annual. Have the same problem.  Need two.  Nothing on eBay  new ones $5-600.  Anyone know if these are cast aluminum or magnesium?  At the cost of new, I’m guessing magnesium.

I highly doubt they were Mag but could be as a lot of the older Cleveland wheels were mag.
Some one should print them!
I’d donate a used one for the effort.

Camp fire material!

If you do it at the Imperial Sand Dunes, you have to throw it into someone else’s campfire. They will hunt you down and fine you for an environmental violation.

Just stick to Sobe bombs, they don’t last as long.

Those are fine, but we are speaking of the inner cap that the vintage airplanes had with 3 screws that covers the wheel nut itself.
Univair has them for $497.

I would sign off a 3D printed one.

Not familiar with that issue. Can you explain what’s happening to the Cotter pins so I can watch for it?

Thanks, Dan

If the cotter pin isn't bent backward sufficiently, it will score/gouge the inside of the wheel cap.

I’m pretty sure all our wheels are magnesium.

I tested one of my damaged caps today. Did the vinegar test, no reaction.  Filed some material off and tried to light it.  No response. It seems these are aluminum.

I know the wheels on my two Mooneys were magnesium. Your wheels are older, they may be different.

Cleveland Maintenance Manual says all 40-86 and 40-87 wheels are magnesium except 40-87C and 40-87H which are aluminum.

The wheel "could" be mag or aluminum depending on P/N

Anyone familiar with either can tell just by lifting them

Same with the small hub caps.

I'd have a TIG welder do it.

Save $$$$$$  by welding if new is $500 ea.  At $85 it might be a toss up.

You're just filling in lost metal on  a cast part.

Clean the weld with a dremel and files

This is not a structural part. Its only a dust cover.

If vinegar doesn't foam on clean metal then its probably aluminum

Rub the inside with steel wool, clean well and try vinegar  No foam No aluminum

I don't think they'd go to the trouble of mag casting a dust cover. Not enough to gain there,

Was able to complete a weld repair on my caps. No a job for an average welder. Wentworth just responded.  They have stock @ $45 per cap. Beats new at $500 and up any day.
