Round 2 has begun...

Recommended Posts

The radio stack kind of surprised me... but I wasn't receiving weather nor traffic on my Avidyne IFD 550 from the Lynx 9000 so I'm sure they are checking cabling. The main thing is removing the Vacuum system and four instruments being replaced with 2 GI 275s. I'm keeping the turn coordinator and airspeed as is. I hope with them taking the Autopilot out they can trouble shoot why NAV and APP weren't working. Heading and Altitude hold were working great. The avionics stack has Avidyne Audio panel and IFD 550 as well as the Lynx 9000 at the bottome of that stack is a KAP 150 and to the right is a Garmin GNS 430W. I will keep the CDI and move it up into one of the top blanks.

Keeping the TC for a reason?

Not sure if it's this way with the 275s, but the STC for the G5s require that the G5 can either serve as a primary attitude indicator OR a primary TC, but not both. So if you elect for it to be the primary TC, you have to have a backup AI.

I've actually heard both ways with the 275s, one camp says you have to have a backup the other says not necessary. One of them is obviously wrong but I've never flown with anything like a panel so I'm unfamiliar with what the 275 is going to show. I elected to keep the TC so that if I ever do lose the 275 or heaven forbid both of them (I've heard one story where a guy actually did lose the AHARS that drives them) I will still know when I'm wings level. Even though I have the 550 AND ForeFlight as redundant systems.

Ease of mind.

I replaced my TC with an RCA 2610-3, it has slip/skid and a battery backup. I have tested it out and if you turn the brightness down from 100% to around 70% on a two hour flight I still had more than 40% battery left in it when landing. From a pure flying standpoint it is easier to fly than the G5's as there is nothing additional on the screen.

do you still have the digital tach for sale?  Mark Mox 248-930-7588  mark.mox@gmail.com

Mark, you may have the wrong post. You may be replying to someone other than me, but I don't have a digital tach and have never had one.

Note on TCs….

Back in the day… they were an economical back-up to the much more expensive AI….

Today… when they wear out, they work terribly in the bumps….

Tomorrow… the TC will be so rare, they will be more expensive…

So…

Having two AIs is surely enough…

Having three, supplies a great tie breaker…

If you fly in VMC only… one AI is pretty good…

Let the TC go…. If / when able….  :)

PP thoughts only…

Note on back-up devices that look similar…

Not all G5s have the same important options installed properly…

Not all GI275s have the same important options installed properly…

Make sure you know what you have and how it is installed…

Don’t assume your HSI is going to magically work like an AI because you saw somebody else’s work this way…

PP thoughts only…

Best regards,

Wayne, good luck with your panel. I'm taking my plane to the shop on Wednesday to get a panel very much like yours, dual GI 275s but with an IFD 540 rather than a 550, and a KAP 150 and a Lynx 9000. Avidyne is expecting to release an update in a couple of weeks that includes an STC for the GI 275s to be driven by the IFD, so you may not need a field approval. I'm going to keep a CDI driven by a KX 165. Maybe the biggest difference in our panels is my ADF! I like the AM radio, and it's actually a useful nav radio for my home airport. I'm not going to keep my turn coordinator, though; an EDM 900 is headed for that spot on the panel.

Good luck with your update it sounds great! My plane was broken in to in the early '90's and all the avionics were stolen from what I can tell in the log books. I bet there was an ADF in there and they just didn't replace it. I'm keeping my Nav 2 OBS and moving it up to one of the top blanks as a backup, it's tied to a GNS 430W but the second GI 275 will have both Nav radio feeds so we could have gone with just the 2 GI-275's. Since I have the plane in the shop during OSH, I was sure hoping that the Avidyne software would have been approved at AirVenture but no such luck. You can bet it will be updated ASAP after the install is done! I think we will both love our new panels.

  • 2 weeks later...

Getting close... I was hoping to have this completed by today (my home airport closes for probably 2 weeks at 0700 tomorrow). I think it will be done a day or two late :-(
