Calling all Central Coast CA Mooney pilots!

Recommended Posts

Hi all - we're moving from the east coast to San Luis Obispo next month. Will be basing our 1976 'F at KSBP.

Wanted to reach out, say hello, and see who may be in the San Luis Obispo/Paso/Oceano area.

Any recommendations for Mooney maintenance shops in the area? Who do you use for routine maintenance, and for your annuals?

Has anyone had luck with the hangar wait list at KSBP?

(And for anyone who has flown across the mountains, headed to the Central Coast, I'd love to know your preferred routes.)

Look forward to meeting future neighbors soon!

Hi @FlyingCanuck, welcome to California!

Once I get my J I'll be flying out of KRHV in San Jose, but have taken a few trips down to Paso Robles in the rental C172s.  I'm getting my pre-buy/annual done at Top Gun (MSC) in Stockton.  My son and I are hoping to get down to San Luis Obispo and Oceano sometime soon.

I don't know anything about hangar waits down that way, but the Bay Area is ridiculous.

@FlyingCanuck  Go West young man, go west!  I apologize for being tardy to the party...................:(

Welcome to the left coast of Kalifornia.................  With that sarcastically stated, the Central Coast is absolutely gorgeous, year round, as you know!!  Been in this area most of my adult life.  I don't plan on leaving till death do us part

Yes, long hangar list at SBP.  Contact SBP airport admin. to get on the list.  There are current outside tie downs available [yuck].

Just down the road about 1/2 hour drive from SBP is my longtime airport base Santa Maria [SMX].  A much shorter hangar list with 1/2 the price of SBP folks.  Incidentally the Central Coast Airfest is returning to SMX this mid- October.  Quite a fine air show with returning Canadian Snowbirds too..............excellent!!

So, Mooney maintenance around these parts.................locally, Coastal Valley Aviation at SMX.  Long time friends of mine and have worked on many, many Mooneys, including mine over the years.  First rate service with fair competitive rates.  Phil Kirkham, owner.

Route to paradise....................from DC area to San Luis Obispo....................my go to, mostly, make your way towards central New Mexico [Santa Rosa area ], then west bound pretty much along I-40 through Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Kingman, Barstow [CA], Lancaster [Edwards Air Force Base area], then draw a direct heading to SBP area.

If I can help further, please ask me.
