Dude where’s my keys!?

Recommended Posts

1. Call a locksmith, pay big bucks and let him figure it out.

2. (a) Remove the door cylinder, take to to a locksmith, get keys at reasonable cost.

(b) Remove the ignition switch and repeat. Wish you hadn't, as it is a pain.

3. Take it by your MSC and let him sort it out. Should work well, and cost depends on which MSC.

4. Call a half dozen of your Mooney buddies and try all their keys. High odds one or more will work. Have copies made of the one that works best.

That is some sage advice, does the baggage door and the main entry door work on the ignition? It would be easy enough to take a lock to a locksmith. I would be happy to send a sas envelope to any member who will send me a key

My baggage door and ignition are the same key, at some point the main door lock was replaced so it is different.

One thing for sure do not buy the electro air push button switch. Very poor quality. About 18$ worth of parts sold for 270$.

I put the ElectroAir ignition switch on a Bravo I had and really liked it. Also no more AD on the Bendix ignition switch.

Be careful about non-bendix key blanks used for your ignition key, like you would find at Lowes or Homedepot etc,  This may sound overly anal at first, but the only airworthy ignition key is a Bendix key for your Bendix ignition switch and here's why. Use of a non-bendix key in the ignition switch has been shown to be able to removed from the ignition switch without the key being moved to the Off position - in other words in a position where the one or both mags are still hot. I unfortunately learned this after someone at my home base died because of it. A student pilot pulled the key after shutting down, got out to push back plane back and was hit by the prop when moved it.

The Mooney door lock is merely a $3 Chicago Cabinet lock and I know the use of cabinet lock keys for ignition switches is prolific. And folks aren't likely to replace with them with a Bendix key blank after hearing this, but be sure to test any ignition key you might be using to ensure it can not be removed without the key in the Off position. Otherwise its a set up to see a repeat of the above needless tragedy.

I did the same love it and changed the door and baggage door locks to an aircraft security barrel and key. They give you a code and if you need you can reorder a key based on that code.

Citabria the same

After I replaced the left mag with a SureFly, if I wasn’t quick on the mag check I’d get after-fire.  Since my mag switch was worn out and needed the overhaul kit, I replaced it with two DPDT toggle switches.  I moved the toggle switches and the master switch to the top of the center stack at the same time and freed up a little panel space.  It was a lot cheaper than the mag switch overhaul kit or Electro Air option.  And no more after-fire.
