gwav8or Posted April 6, 2022 Report Posted April 6, 2022 Any former Grumman Tiger owners that transitioned to a Pre-J Mooney in the group? I used to own a Tiger but am in the process of finding my Mooney. Wondering if anybody here could share their transition experience as well as any characteristics of the Mooney that you like or dislike as compared to a Grumman Tiger. exM20K Posted April 6, 2022 Report Posted April 6, 2022 not a perfect match, but I believe @Glen Davis owned a Tiger before his 201. -dan Quote
Glen Davis Posted April 6, 2022 Report Posted April 6, 2022 What do you mean, Dan, not a perfect match? I owned a Grumman tiger and now I own an M20J. I’m at Sun and fun but will reach out to this individual as soon as I can.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 1 Quote

You’ll find the Mooney easier to taxi for sure You should have an easy transition, just make sure you put the gear down, get the speeds right and you’ll be fine. I live on the Airpark where Fletchair is located and see Grumman’s come and go every week. 1 Quote

But, I'd be happy to hear your experience once you get back from SnF! Quote
carusoam Posted April 7, 2022 Report Posted April 7, 2022 The coolest thing about the Mooney when compared to the slower Tiger… Loading the young family on a rainy day…. Open the door… everyone files in… Very little water gets close to the fancy seats… Toss the umbrellas in baggage area, the door opens vertically like a natural rain cover… Doors close easily… nobody gets yelled at… Tiger… slide the canopy back… start yelling hurry, hurry, hurry, my fancy seats are getting wet! Even the art of closing and storing the umbrella in the back is more challenging in a Tiger… PP Biased opinion only… not a Grumman pilot… Best regards, -a- 1 1 Quote

He never ours any hours on it but it's pretty pristine... Until he hit a light a few months ago and dinged the wing pretty good. You could throw your airplane away and buy a j there and it would probably be cheaper than shipping a tiger here and ferrying a j back. Edited April 7, 2022 by philip_g Quote

M20F-1968 Posted April 9, 2022 Report Posted April 9, 2022 I did my instrument training in a Grumman Tiger. At that point I had only flown a Mooney 1 hour. The Grumman is very light on the controls, fun to fly, not as stable on the ground and a lighter airplane with much less capability. It is easier to get in on a dry day, but you wish you were climbing in a Mooney is a bad rain storm. My F model (now really a J with manual gear and hydraulic flaps) is heavier on the controls (due to the push rod linkages) but is equally as sensitive. Elevator and aileron controls in both is just a nudge in level flight. The Mooney however is much more stable, has much more range (I have long range tanks), is a better IFR platform, and mine is turbonormalized so has much better service ceiling. Both are slippery airplanes and are floaters, but surprisingly so, I think the Mooney may be more so than the Grumman despite the fact that it is a heavier airplane. Structurally, there is no comparison. The Mooney is the preferred airplane in my opinion overall. John Breda 3 Quote
201Steve Posted April 9, 2022 Report Posted April 9, 2022 I almost bought a tiger until I realized it would actually be cheaper to own a J mooney that goes faster, farther, and more substantial of a platform. I had read an AOPA article about the Tiger being a “bargain buy” for what you get for the money. My experience 3+ years ago was the exact opposite. Although a mostly helpful community, those Tiger lovers think they are flying TBM’s as far as value goes. 1 Quote
WaynePierce Posted April 9, 2022 Report Posted April 9, 2022 I wouldn't mind owning a Tiger, if it was given to me by AOPA. 4 Quote
steingar Posted April 9, 2022 Report Posted April 9, 2022 Had I a Tiger I doubt I would switch unless it was a 201 or better. The Tiger is just a fairly similar aircraft. That said, I routinely lampoon the Grumman Gang. A similarly equipped Tiger sells for a lot more than the short body Mooney that can handily outrun it. Indeed they sell for 201 prices, and at that point it isn't even a comparison. Quote
A64Pilot Posted April 10, 2022 Report Posted April 10, 2022 It’s funny how you guys talk about getting in, in the rain. I miss the C-210 or my Maule for that, it’s really the best thing about a high wing, sun shade for airplane camping, and something to stand under in the rain 2 Quote
A64Pilot Posted April 11, 2022 Report Posted April 11, 2022 (edited) To me canopies with a clear window over your head are HOT, you have to have a sun shade, which negates the utility of a clear top A Rans RV for example is just too hot for me. But I don’t live in the Great white North either. Edited April 11, 2022 by A64Pilot Quote
Pstone Posted April 11, 2022 Report Posted April 11, 2022 For transitioning from a Tiger to a Mooney, start with a M20D. Quote
TheAv8r Posted April 11, 2022 Report Posted April 11, 2022 Flew a Tiger for over 250hrs before buying my Mooney! I looked into buying one, but the price for them has skyrocketed. They are a niche airplane: the canopy, visibility, crisp light handling on the controls, 130+ Knots on 10gph fixed gear, a low wing you can get in on both sides, they just don’t make many planes like that. They also didn’t make a ton of them, so supply & demand. My wife and I fly XC a lot more than we used to so a Mooney was a better mission fit, but Tigers are more fun to fly IMO and more enjoyable. Nothing beats landing, throwing the canopy back on a hot day and smiling in the breeze. Or spinning like a Tailwheel over a parking spot with the free castering nose wheel. That is, until you have to push it back in the hangar 1 Quote
