MARZ
Any avionic gurus out there??? What is involved in enabling terrain in a GNS 430 - I have a card and when I go through setup it gives an error message that says I have to manually configure the hardware?? Part 011-00280-10 Main software version 5.04 GPS software version 3.
kortopates
Enter setup mode and Select the MAIN SYSTEM CONFIG page, Scroll though the CONFIGURE option to select "Terrain". The "Terrain Type" option should appear below, change the value from "NONE" to "TERRAIN", then highlight the TEST CARD option below and press the ENT Key. Your good if you get a PASS, a FAIL condition indicates the card is unusable. This is not owner/pilot approved maintenance.

jetdriven
Doesnt FAR 43 allow owners to update database cards? This doesnt fall under that? What does Crystal Avionics say?
kortopates
Yes, updating of the database cards is specifically allowed as owner maintenace and must be logged by the owner/pilot. But entering setup mode of the GNS430 to alter its configuration/installation parameters goes well beyond that. The issue Mike is having though is a one time configuration change as Mike apparently never had Terrain setup on his unit and thus future terrain card updates will be as easy as navadata card updates. MARZ
Any idea on what I'm going to have to shell out for the configuration change?
kortopates
Minimal if anything - especially If you have a relationship with the shop. Its only a couple minutes.
jetdriven
Mike, give Avionics Unlimited in Conroe a call. I often ask them for advice and they have been friendly.
MARZ
Byron, great advice- called them up and found that the radio needed an additional board - set up a time and flew the plane there - they pulled the radio, I had a cup o joe and read a couple articles in the latest flying magazine, they popped it back in the rack and off I went in less than an hour. GREAT People, couldn't have been easier.
