Nice job, if that was your first IFR flight, it doesn't show! :)

Peanut gallery suggestions:

  • Since a lot of people take off from non-towered airports and then pick up their IFR clearance, instead of saying "at Orange County" I'd suggest getting in the habit of specifying "on the ground at Orange County," so they don't have to ask you to clarify that.
  • It's fine when it's a nice VMC day, but don't make it a habit to rush cancelling IFR in the air before you're on the ground.  In fact, it's good experience to have to look up the ATC phone number to cancel on the ground or cancelling through Flight Service if you can't get radio reception on the taxiway.  After all, in this case where you were practicing the instrument approach by VFR, ATC could have immediately cleared someone else for the same approach IFR.  Likewise, if you break out at 900' AGL with the runway in sight, why cancel IFR when you might have to go missed (like if a herd of elk saunters onto the runway)?
  • I'd also suggest being a little careful about practicing instrument approaches in VMC by yourself.  You're VFR, but your attention is being drawn to your charts and panel, when your priority is looking out for traffic.  It might be okay farther out, but as you get closer it gets riskier to have your attention divided.  I'd suggest abandoning the practice approach when you're within 3-4 miles of the airport.  Obviously, that's less of an issue with a second pair of eyeballs or safety pilot.
