1966 Mooney M20C Ranger 21 serial #3286

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased this aircraft from a family friend who was selling it for the previous owners wife. She was last flown in 2005.

A pre-buy inspection was performed and an estimate in the $10,000+/- range could be expected (excluding the ADSB-out or any avionics repairs/upgrades) to get her airworthy.  Both tanks were filled and are holding fuel with no visible leaks.

The purpose of this topic is so that I can be better informed about what to expect, and where to look before I have the AP begin the annual.

I would appreciate any input or experiences, good or bad :-), when it comes to getting an annual performed on a girl that has been neglected for many years.

If it hasn't flown in 16 years chances are excellent that it will need both an engine and prop overhaul regardless of the number of hours on them. As a general rule, you'll lose money getting this airworthy if it were given to you for free.

Add this to Paul's list of "bargains" and we'll see where it ends up.

Welcome aboard ETA...

Are you a pilot? Do you have any airplane ownership experience?

Read up on pre-purchase inspections...

You can call yours a post purchase inspection... :)

Either way, it’s all stuff you want to know about your plane.

Expect to put your big boy pants on... some responses are going to sound a bit mean...

Take them in...

It is quite possible you may get lucky...

You won’t know how good your purchase is... until the other side of the annual.

Be on the look out for all things corrosion related...  get it stopped before it spreads...

Somebody asked for the same advice yesterday...

Be on the lookout for the...

  • 100 hour inspection list
  • Parts Manual
  • Service Manual

Good luck and best regards,

-a-

There's a recent thread around here where someone was asking about buying a Mooney that was out of annual since 2005, and only "flew in the pattern" up until 2011.

If the Search bar won't find it, try Google and add mooneyspace to the search.

Good luck! I really like my C model!

Corrosion would be a big concern.  A mouse nest and mouse urine along with just old fashioned metal corrosion which vintage Mooney’s suffer from.

I would have the interior completely removed for inspection before committing to the purchase.

Here is an example of what can be found:
