You may try to include the engine people have with your data...

Where the plane lives...

What season it is...

When the oil gets changed out again...

Most of the driving force for selection revolves around these items...

 

Some engines will get a special oil if they are in the break-in process for a cylinder or two... or six...

 

What type of research are you trying to accomplish?

When I lived on the WV / OH border (airport was on the bank of the Ohio River), I used AeroShell 15W-50 and changed oil every 50 hours. My first Concorde went almost 7 years just sitting in the hangar, no maintainer or nothing.

Since relocating and moving my C to Sweet Home Alabama, I do the same thing. Concorde seems to last about 6 years here, less if I fly too infrequently.

Nothing super scientific or anything of that nature.  Looking primarily at a high level generalization of brand/viscosity used by airplane owners.  I also am curious about the percentage of those that use additives whether they are included in the primary oil product or in a supplementary product.

Of course, there are a lot of factors to consider if it were aimed at a more granular objective.  As you can see I did not include mineral oil since that is primarily used for break in (unless there’s one of you out there using it regularly).

In the future I may look to narrow the scope and increase the specificity, but until then this will suffice.

I certainly appreciate your suggestions and insight.

As far as additives go...

Oils have evolved and included them already... like CamGuard...

CamGuard is pretty good at keeping oil stuck on metal parts a hair longer...

We need it to stay for a month... it is good for a couple weeks...

Ordinary oil covers one or two weeks on its own...  fly often enough... no CG required...

Not quite snake oil... but not the magic elixir for avoiding corrosion either, unfortunately.

Mike Busch and EAA have a fantastic webinar series for both experienced and new aircraft owners alike.

I emailed Mike a question recently and he replied within a day.  I fully expected to be referred to one of his Savvy services however, he personally took the time to reply several times without ever trying to push his business.

Highly recommend EAA’s webinar series and Mike’s books.  They have certainly helped me a lot.

Mike B is really good...

Don’t expect to be clobbered with funky sales technique...  that’s not his style...

 

A couple of times each week around here...

Somebody starts describing an engine challenge...

If they are lucky...

They can get their engine data out of their JPI...

Loaded up to Savvy, and shared where everyone can have a look...

One of his partners is a Mooniac, around here daily...

Working with Savvy is more of a partnership...  high value, low cost... mostly free...

If you are really new to plane ownership... they have some really good services to support you...
