I’m inviting my friend @Danb to join the conversation...

Dan had posted pics of his exhaust valves a while back...

I’ve never seen one broken like this....

Affricate,

Did you have partial power with that for approach?

Thanks for sharing the details...

Good luck with your next steps...

Best regards,

@affricate Had you borescoped the cylinders since you bought the airplane? I'm curious if there were any observable exhaust valve anomalies prior to failure, and if not, how long it had been since the last borescope. I check mine every ~25 hours at oil change and would like to know if there's reason to take a look more often. Thanks for any info!

Cheers,
Rick

The cylinders were borescoped in OCT 2020, and no observable abnormalities were evidenced. I'll keep you posted,

Had about 22 inches of power, very limited, almost enough to hold altitude.

Have been dealing with Airmark with the MOH of this engine, so far so good.  These wetheads are very specialized, and expensive. 111K new, 69K reman, 63K OH by Lycoming.

Much lag (3-4 months) obtaining factory cylinders; Any one have any experience with Nickel plated OH cylinders?

Just curious given extreme heat, and pressure of these Bravo engines.

I had one Nickel plated cylinder on my engine for several hundred hours. It did not give me any trouble but you wouldn’t expect any for that time period in the first place.

New cylinder availability is an issue for the overhaul shops. Zephyr mentioned it to me when I brought my engine to them. Still don’t know if I’ll end up with Lycoming or Superior cylinders on mine.

  • 2 months later...

Took a bit of time but my engine is back and ready for install.   Looking forward to getting it off the ground in about 2-3 weeks.  All in this will have taken around 6 months...  Good news is I'll have the fresh overhaul, new MT 4 blade, and a fresh annual.  I did end up going with nickel plating so Ill report back on how that goes to those interested.
