Pandemic hobbies

I’ve taken up cooking.  Well, more of it.  I now have a 20’ commute instead of 45-60 minutes.  So I can make better looking, healthier, and cheaper meals than the average takeout that we did more often when both of us had long commutes and 2 hungry kids after school.  I’m also flying more too.  Which is a huge win.

I guess those don’t count quite like shirt making or something cool.  But I love the shirt!

Who has free time? Work has been crazy busy.

The only time I worked from home was when I had the covid. (no more meetings, I have a 102 d fever and need to pass out on the couch!)

Since I got my IA everybody at the airport wants me to do something. Two planes to work on and the wife never ceases with the honey dos.

Our one and only hobby has always been travel. Which was completely shut down by COVID. Living here in Colorado, there is plenty to see and places to go without even leaving the state. Even with all the State and National Parks closed, there is so much public land that is available and really no way to close it. So we decided to take up camping/RV'ing.

I built up a 2014 4Runner to be able to pull an off road trailer and to be able to go anywhere we wanted to go. Then we found a trailer for sale in Boston. We took a weekend and drove to Boston and back to pick it up. We spent the summer and fall camping almost every weekend somewhere, but never in a camp ground. We just head into the back country and find a place to spend the weekend.

Building all the plastic models that have been sitting in my closet.  The F-4 will have the same squadron insignias from when I lived on Clark AFB growing up in the 70's. First time using an airbrush.

Next model will be a P-70 which is special to me.  My grandfather was in the first night fighter at Henderson Field (still have the hand painted squadron insignia flight jacket, now mounted with wings, original green tinted goggles, and leather flying helmet) that flew the P-70.  Also the first mutli he flew. Painting will be easy as it's all flat black except the blue formation lights.

After that will be the F-15 with the same insignia from Eglin where my Dad retired in the 80's.

Yes.  They weren't there very long and he didn't fly them very long before moving to a squadron on Canton Island back flying well used P-39Ds which is what he flew before the P-70.  Told me the single engine fighter guys had an easier time transitioning to multi than the multi-bomber guys transitioning to single engine fighters.

There is a guy around here with a pan head Harley with the name Pandemic on the gas tank.

I was looking through a puppy adoption site a number of months ago, and one of the puppies was named covid.  :-O  Luckily the doggie adopters will hopefully have renamed the hapless pup!

I finally started baking real sourdough bread.  For years I've made a sort of faux sourdough, where the sourdough batter gives flavor but you use yeast for leavening.  The problem with using sourdough for leavening is it takes all day. With COVID I was home all day anyway, so I went ahead.

I'll be making sourdough loaves from now on.  I've never had better bread anywhere ever.

That, and I'm putting finishing touches on Origami book number three.

Not sure its a hobby, but I do like metal work so I've been fabricating tools that I needed at the hangar.

Oil Change Tools, I had a cheap cutter but wanted one a little better, been using a crows foot to torque the filters so while the Mill was running I cut out a new Torque Adapter

Tried my hand at a little DIY Anodizing this afternoon, will do the cutter next

Made some progress on the KitFox. I wish I could claim 100% of the work but I can’t. I had to get some outside help to keep the project moving along but I join in often.  I have an IG account @kitfoxkarson where I post progress pics for those interested.
