Air conditioning - weight penalty

Recommended Posts

2 questions for the group as I continue searching for an Ovation.

Generally what is the weight penalty for factory air?

Secondly on the Non-FIKI Ovations is there still a spray-bar for the Window? (I have read here that non-FIKI's don't have the back up alternator and pump/s, however I have seen conflicting info about the windshield spray-bar.)

Thanks

both manufacturers of the AC and FIKI systems are around here... and are pretty good about answering questions...

AC and FIKI weigh a similar amount...

Planes usually get one or the other...

There are a few that get both...

The third option is the built in O2 system...

Lead Charlie weights get removed... for the install...

So...

Do you calculations closely... you may be swapping some useless lead for more useful mechanical items...

What are "Lead Charlie" weights?

That stack of lead bricks by your batteries...

They are detailed in your POH.... how many, how much.... check the WnB section.

They occupy the space and weight where some useful things get mounted...

All Mooneys have some Charlie weight somewhere...

Just, Long bodies have extra opportunities baked in that other Mooneys didn’t get...

Not the J, it’s not listed in the W&B. Since the J was lengthened with no change to the wing or its position the J must have a more aft weight anyway.
The only lead weights on the J are the counterweights on the flight controls.

Mooney “Charlie weights” when needed are bolted the structure at the very back of the fuselage inside the two rectangular access panels under the horizontal stabilizer.  Unlike some Diamond DA 40’s which add them to the engine.
