The cross county was supposed to be clear sky today - Oof!  I wondered as I had about 2 miles visibility (down at an angle from 7,000 feet) if is was due to wild fires far, far way.  Over Illinois and Indiana, it was flying in milk.

Nope, the plane was down for 3 1/2 weeks for a GFC500 and then a handful of weekend trips have kept me from the hours needed. Sitting at about 23 hours right now, getting in 1-2 flights a week. Flew my cross country a couple Saturday's ago so all that is left is more studying for the oral and knocking out the rest of the hours. Heading to Oshkosh tomorrow so that will add another week to the delay.

Headed down to Lakeland this weekend early (BCOD) Saturday morning to avoid the rough stuff I can’t get over in my J. Had a great shot of the sunrise. 
 

My next door neighbor had no problem getting above the weather when he left Friday afternoon. 
(I hangar in the nice neighborhood!)

Went to Hyde Park - home of Franklin D Roosevelt - with my son the history major.  Kptd->20N

Intense smoke haze on the way back.  A cool fish bowl effect though - more on that on the western smoke thread.

Also we got passed by a pair of F35's 1000 ft above - they went right by us but I couldn't get my camera out fast enough.  Zoom in you will see them.  They were 3 or 4 knots faster than my Mooney but burned more fuel.

a bit late to share my first long cross country flight. TX to OH ( 6R3 to 2G2). 1960 NM round trip for college tour.

really appreciate community help and advices with weather planning. the trip went well. as advised, worked around the weather. a few cool things about a trip:

  • meeting another mooneyspacer @MooneyMike at 6I2
  • 30 mins flight from 2G2 to land in 2 more states (WV and PA)
  • stopping at KPCD to get Oshkosh special gas for $3.75

And it was easy traveling for my daughter, she slept most of the time… if it were not for ATC flight following, it would be quite lonely…

A couple of firsts for me yesterday.  First time flying in the O2 levels.  First time using my home built O2 system.  First time landing at Leadville.

Went to 16500' and it was awesome!  Highly recommend oxygen to anyone flying out west, it just opens up so many doors.   O2 sats were comfortably in the 90's with my home made system.  A nice bonus was the 33 degree air on a hot summer day!

I put a 4-place system together with pneumatic push connect fittings and a beer oxygenation flow meter.  Total cost, including brand new O2 bottle was around $200.

I guess it was also my first time flying through Weston Pass inverted.  Pretty cool.  @carusoam Help!

BTW - check out our ground transportation - xootr scooters.  These are "man"sized scooters with big wheels you see and enough of a board to stand on feet side by side despite my size 13's.  They are trivially easy to learn to use and very very low effort on flat terrain like a barrier island - with almost zero effort - less than walking, I measured with my gps we were rolling at 6mph.  And like kick kick twice then roll for like 30 seconds, repeat.  They fold very very small very very fast.  I have a pair and they are perfect for short rolls in certain terrain.  Like 2 miles or so.

Wife bought me one years ago, and it is da bomb, as the kids used to say.  Company founder was an enthusiastic GA pilot and owner who was, sadly, lost when his MU2 went missing on a return flight from the Bahamas.

That they fold and stay folded makes them a perfect fit in and out of the Moo ey baggage compartment.

That is a beautiful picture enhanced with the GI275 reflection. If it was mine, I’d have it enlarged, framed and placed on a wall.

Thank you Victor!  I am thinking about it!  What makes it cool is the lighting and colors and not just any old print service could capture that.  I don't currently know a proper print service.  But I think I will try!  I thought that was a really pretty moment and I took several pictures trying to get just the right moment with the light, as I often do, and that one where the light is making that beam effect and also glinting on the tks strip ended up the nicest.  Its just nifty the way the light was just right to also pick up the reflection of the full gi275 dial.  They really are wonderful and bright instruments!

One cool thing that this evening was an example of is that in the sky, the sunset is a little later than the official sunset time given at ground level.  And once you start descending the sun disappears quickly!  On the other side, some evenings if you take off right after sunset, you can see the sun again as you climb to altitude.

Well done. Was the GI275 reflection a coincidence in that you did not notice it until after the pic shot?

I noticed it, and I even changed my direction of flight a little bit to place it right where I wanted to in the scene as the reflection crept around the curved wind screen.  Fun things to do while on an iff flight plan!  I pointed about 10 degrees to the right of my flight path for about 1 min as I snapped about half a dozen shots.  SO I guess you can say I posed the scene.

A good job in capturing all together at the right moment as time waits for no one!

It’s a shame picturesque sunrises and sunsets are only for a very short time.

Good luck in finding a good print service and thanks for sharing.

I sort of have the opposite opinion - I think part of the beauty of the perfect sunset is knowing it is just a moment, ephemeral.  If it were there all the time, we would grow bored with it.  But knowing its just perfect for a moment makes us want to jump up and go look at it while the time is right!

This one was the runner up.  Just like one minute earlier.  I was descending so I was a little higher which with descending makes the changing light of the sunset unfold quickly.  That the gi275 wasn’t framed well but did show up is why I turned right a few degrees.  I like that the clouds are glowing here but I liked the glint beams of the sun better in the other one.

actuslly both of these are more vivid in my iPhone 12 plus - seems this website downgrades the quality.
