GPSS Interface Question

Recommended Posts

Greetings fellow Mooney drivers,

Although I have owned my Mooney since 1994, I just signed up on Mooneyspace.com and am hoping that someone on the list might have some sage advice on GPSS.

I have a Century II B autopilot for the roll axis with an STEC PSS 60 for the pitch axis in my 1966 M-20E. I recently removed my ancient KX170 B w/ CDI and had a Garmin GNC 355 GPS Nav/Comm  with a new Garmin GI-106B CDI installed in its panel slot to bring the bird into the 21st Century at last. Everything works as advertised when using the autopilot, but I would really like to reduce pilot workload further and GPSS sounds like the answer.

I do not yet have GPSS installed but am eager to do so soon. The reason that I did not have a GPSS converter/adapter installed when the GNC 355 was put in is that, at the time, I was planning on upgrading in the near future to two Garmin GI-275s as replacements for my existing attitude indicator and DG. I was informed that the GI-275 would supply the GPSS function interface with my autopilot without the need for additional converter/adapter installation.

I am now re-thinking whether I really want to spend the extra money right now on the GI-275 upgrade so I’m seeking advice on what would get GPSS onboard in an alternative way. From my online research so far, it looks like the DAC International GDC31 GPSS System Roll Steering Converter is what I need.

Having said all of this does anyone have any suggestions on what I may need to interface my existing equipment?

Thank you very much,

Frank Gash

Replace the cdi with a g5, has gpss built in.

gpss by itself unless purchased from Ebay is pretty expensive

I don't think the G5 will provide GNSS other autopilots, just Garmin.  I have been known to be wrong though.

Welcome aboard, Frank.

What took so long?   :)

Glad you joined the MS party.

Look up the proper DAC model... to match your existing system...

The used ones are getting plentiful.

See what eBay has it priced at...

Add that to your cost comparisons...

Best regards,

I have the same configuration you have (CIIB and 60PSS)
I have a DAC31 installed and it works great

I also installed a G5 as an AI (to replace a TC) including a GMU 11 and GAD29B and tested the GPSS functionality (built a harness) and it also works great. I am waiting for the Vacuum DG to go belly up.
you will need the GMU and the GAD29B

the DAC31 would be cheaper to install and is simpler to use (annunciation is good) but the G5 provide a better platform to get rid off the vacuum system

Frank,

I would leapfrog ahead to the GI275 in HSI mode.  Even if you got a GPSS box at a low price, you are still sinking installation dollars into an obsolete device, and not adding any value to your plane.  Then you need to find a location to install the switch.  And you need to worry about the STC permission letter.  Not saying its not there, but some manufacturers don't reissue th permission letter to subsequent buyers.

A 275 installs fairly easily, and does not need remote boxes like the G5.   Will provide a good upgrade path in the future.  And from what I have read, it will have a very stable analog signal for your autopilot.
