65 and later had servos installed for the Brittain wing leveler...

Pre 65 Would need additional work to get to where Garmin is going at this moment in time...

Moving down the chain age wise won’t be intense development, but could include already expensive parts...

Best regards,

Interesting thought, but they are including the 1965 and up D models. The D model did not have the wing leveler so there is nothing there.

D model was intended to be able to be upgraded to full C...

It may have the Servo locations in place...a few pieces of sheet metal in the standard locations...

Looking for the hardware in the plane with out having the servos attached to it would be a challenge... best done at annual while everything is open...

Just thinking out loud on this one, Richard...

I'll have to look in January when I have it all opened back up for annual.

Does that chart really say that there are more registered M20R than the number that were produced?

Yes it does, and the reason why is that most of the L models have had the service bulletin completed that convert the Porsche powered airplanes to the R model.

Cheers,

Rick

Changing out the power plant probably won’t change the airframe from L to R...

The L was the first long Body, followed by the updated TLS/ Bravo...

The Bravo and O1 are very similar except the engines in each...

So... putting an O engine in the M20L, probably didn’t change its registration at all, except for the engine details that would be updated...

:)

Just like when owners in the past upgraded their D models with retracts and constant speed props--they're still D models, not C models.

that is not true - it would take a lot more than a Service Bulletin to do that.

I believe it was Mod Works in Punta Gorda that did an STC that would allow you to put a IO-550 in an L model to replace the Porsche engine. It definitely was not an R model when it was done and the tag on the airplane will always show it as an  L model.

If memory serves me correctly they only had about 600 pounds useful load after the conversion. It would have been most likely more cost effective to sell the L and buy an Ovation. At least you could carry a passenger when you were done and have some hope of resale.

600 lbs for fuel and passengers?  Wow.

O fuel tanks... 100 gal X 6 #/gal = 600#  (roughly)

How much do your passengers weigh?

Always do your WnB... :)

Not a problem if you and your passengers together weigh less than a lb.  No problem.  Like for Tinker Bell and her BFF Ringy Bell.

Discussions of how to modify another Mooney...

Not so much if or when to upgrade a Mooney to forever-plane status...

:)

Of course... there are always going to be limitations...

Just think how much UL an M20L gets by going with a pair of dynon’s...

percentage wise... that would be ginormous...

Best regards,
