That's actually good information. The GDL69a will take the new packages... but when I've checked before... I take a look at them about once a year, the Icing stuff was only in the $99/month package. Now it appears it's in the $29/month package... I'll have to take another look at this.

As @GeeBee said, out west here, we can see the build up's a hundred miles away. And they're easy to avoid. But icing is what I'm always looking at. Icing forecasts, freezing levels, current icing conditions, etc.

Thanks.

We need it to avoid Tstorms here in the midwest also. Have been having alot of those lately. But icing is possible even in the summer, the worst icing events I have run into have been summertime events, you don’t necessarily expect them. Fortunately, in the summer, down is an out.

Yep, the worst icing event I've ever had in my Mooney was climbing out of Lincoln, NE on the first of July a few years ago.

I've found that the in the last year or so, ForeFlight has updated their icing data and it's very accurate. I have that overlay up on ForeFlight in the cockpit any time I'm going to be flying through visible moisture, summer or winter.

Looking to get XM weather on panel and portable with one XM subscription.

I'm considering adding a GDL69A SXM but wanted to make sure I'm getting the connection that I'm looking for.  I understand I need to add 69A for XM weather to panel (G500/GTN750).  But I have a yoke mount Aera 796 and I'd like to have XM weather on this with a single XM subscription.  I do have a flight stream 510 card / FS210.  I have the Aera bare wire mounted to the panel now...the current XM antenna puck is under the glareshield at the top.  Can I get XM weather to the Aera via 69A?  What modules are needed in that pathway?  If I changed to another portable (i.e. 760) would this change the above?

You need a separate subscription for each "antenna", so if you use a GDL69a with an XM antenna on the airplane and and a GXM40 "puck" antenna you will need two subscriptions.

The Garmin GDL52 https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/529290 receives both ADS-B traffic and weather and XM weather and audio. (The GDL51 receives just XM if that's all you are looking for. (https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/592645/pn/010-01561-40) )

Either of these would be able to send those products via bluetooth to your iPad and Aera 796 and since it only uses one antenna, it would only require one subscription, but it could not send it to your panel mount.

@LANCECASPER what if I did not want to use the puck for the Aera and instead use the 69A from the panel and send that info to the Aera?  Can I do that via Flightstream or Bluetooth or hard wire?  or are you stuck in the panel vs portable divide??  I already get information from my panel sent to the Aera (i.e. traffic, flight plan, etc), just not sure if XM will flow as well...

XM... often available on the ground...

ADSB... often requires getting to about 1k’ agl above the ground for reception...

With ForeFlight and a cellular data connection the display of traffic and weather is visible on the ground.  Once a good ADS-B signal is available the display switches to that source.  I find it is a nearly seamless transition.

That won't work. I'm not aware of any way for the GDL69A  to send it to a portable. ADSB yes through a GTX345 or Flightstream, but XM no.

From Garmin:

The GDL 69/69A utilizes RS-232, Garmin HSDB, discrete inputs/outputs, and analog audio inputs/outputs to communicate with other LRUs and systems on the aircraft. The GDL 69/69A is capable of supporting six simultaneous display and control interfaces. The installation manual does not have any information on portable units, so you would want to check with the installer what options you have in your particular airframe.

However, to make things easier, you could consider the FlightStream 510, which would broadcast SXM over Bluetooth to two portable devices at the same time (for example an Aera 760 and iPad).

So that sounds promising...I'll have to ask my avionics guy and see what he says...

Actually you can stream GDL69 weather to an iPad via a Flightstream but only if you are using Garmin Pilot. Other software is not supported. I can’t speak for the Aera devices as I don’t own one.
