1996 and newer models with highest useful load

Looking for a project to acquire now and take time making it special.

ive looked at many of the 201,231,252, and j’s and the useful load seems to vary wildly. 
I like the 96 and newer interior but it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker. 
im just interested in which models to focus on that have the highest useful, or potential. 
I would like to end up with 1,000#’s at the end.

I just mean specifically which factory produced models yielded highest UL

A Piper Comanche 250/260 or 400 will do that and are cheaper to buy.

Once upon a time I was trying to decide between an Eagle and a 252 (I couldn't afford an Encore) I came to the conclusion that an Encore was a loaded M20K and the Eagle was a stripped down Ovation. And the most cost effective way to get the best useful load, and all the goodies, was to do what @kortopates did. And that was to buy a nice 252 and convert it to an Encore.

The Eagles are nice airplanes and are very fast with heaps of useful load. But the panel in a stock Eagle wasn't any better than the panel in my slightly upgraded M20C. So I bought a 252 that will become an Encore this fall.

01s are over 1k#s UL... and come pretty nicely fit with all the needed goods...

Updating all the electronics to WAAS color screens is a great modernization project that can increase the UL while you work on it...

This is a whole thread in its self. And one that's been written a few times ;)

But at a high level convert the MB engine to an SB which is more boost, less RPM, more fuel flow = 220 hp up from 210 hp.

Upgrade the brakes (double puck from single puck) and the knock on effects such as master cylinders, gear doors, etc.

Change the control counter weights.

Re-map the tach and some other engine instruments.

Sounds fun.  
 

mmmm double puck brakes.  I’d love those on a J.  First turnoff every time.  Unless I’d just be tempted to lock them up... ;-p
 

I guess people do this during overhaul if they’re gonna do it?

Yeah, that's when most do the conversion. And that's my plan as well. But on the other hand, if I'd just bought a 252 with a <500 hour engine, I'd just do it at the next annual.

Others would say blasphemy!

but on the serious side, you can certainly “buy” one cheaper, but most modern autopilots aren’t stc’d in them, and the panels aren’t easily configurable to modern avionics. 
they are also just flat out slower, and burn more fuel. 
now some of the older ones have outrageous UL’s, and they also have laminar flow wings, so they aren’t all bad.

Mine was built in 1964, while there are lots of newer Mooney models none have the overall performance of the 400. Sure a Mooney airframe may be more efficient in fuel burn, they can’t lift as much weight or carry it as far as my Comanche.

That's the same year as my M20C.  Except your 400 could tow my C like a glider.

While Mooney was busy putting an IO-360 in an E model, Piper was putting an IO-720 in a Comanche and a pair of IO-504’s in a Twin Comanche.  While efficiency is nice, sometimes brute horsepower is nicer.

Doc has the aerobatic version.... :)
 

Al was busy on two fronts... speed and efficiency...

Brand P selected speed only... Laminar flow wing and way more HP...

Rocket Engineering took that theory to the next level...  P46T
