N2652W will have a new home!

Still waiting on the PCU and Mag to come in. I’m sure there is high demand for these as it’s been almost 10 days. I’m wanting to get these completed, take a longer x-country trip, and plan for the Mooney PPP here in June. 

G5 will be later (along with GAD 13, electric step, no vacuum instruments!) and, if BK does deliver on TT, will plan that for next year. IFR ticket will be restarting one prop gov and mag are done. Sure wish there was a Mooney specific CFII closer to KGYI for that but, will make due. Flying has really become fun again and I don’t want to miss out on it anymore...

Governor came in! I'm getting that Monday from Byams. Mag was sent out today and should be here Monday also - can't wait to get these done. Gonna keep the right mag as backup.

David Lloyd returned the left mag - he's a standup guy! Really appreciate his kind words - he even sent a ck for the usage - something else.

So now I'm waiting for the AP to have time for these updates then, after a couple of hrs local maintenance flights, going for a longer x-country!

Everything is in! Setup for next week. I'm getting some internal star washers and mag gaskets just to be safe and have them on hand.

Prop governor and mag go in tomorrow! All scheduled. Flying locally to keep her moving. Running great - hard to believe I have almost 60 hrs on her since I got her on 12/4...

Almost 9 hrs since oil change - added half a quart this past weekend... 

I'll do a maintenance flight before going to far but looking forward to a longer stretch!

It might just be me and my caution, but if you have a known defective prop governor there's no way I would be flying the airplane. As the PIC you determine the airplane's airworthiness before every flight. The old governor does not sound like it's airworthy.  The last thing you want is an overspeed situation which will require an engine teardown. Glad to hear the new governor goes in tomorrow

It does adjust, it's taking more adjustment than I like. This is a preemptive replacement. I did talk to the shop so we're in sync. I flew it Saturday and was still able to adjust and cycle the prop. When I flew it for the cross country flight, it was just after oil change. Talking to David, I flew it in the pattern several times to make sure she cycles. That appeared to help it.

Flight to the shop will be at Cessna speeds as a precaution  ;o)

If it's bypassing oil internally it has already failed, nothing preemptive about that. The fact that you can still adjust it somewhat and fly it without any parts exiting the side of the cowling means you haven't had a catastrophic failure . . yet. But if the governor is not governing according to spec it has failed. Flying it at Mooney, Cessna or Schwinn speeds is not a good idea. It's not that easy to find a  spot to land in the Metroplex with oil all over your windshield.

I don't think you're being overly cautious. I've seen firsthand how fast a prop governor can go from symptoms to complete failure. I think "preemptive" is when you change something out BEFORE it shows signs of needing to be replaced. I have a preventative maintenance schedule that includes vacuum pumps (when I had one), mags, tires, blah, blah, blah.

Yeah, I'm going to take the advice given. I canceled the appointment for tomorrow and contacted Savvy to see if we can find someone to come out to KGYI. I'm cautious too and I'd much rather wait for them to come out. Seems the prudent thing to do since 'she' is talking to me.

She sure did fine over the weekend but, that was in the pattern. Rather not risk it for sure.

I think you are making the correct call Don. As a long time owner of the same plane (30 years), you'll learn when your plane begins "talking" to you and when that "talking" is actually screaming at you. I had a prop governor fail. I saw some fluctuations in RPM during a flight. I thought it was my tach going bad - "talking". In actuality, it was "screaming" at me because on the next take-off, the governor stopped controlling the prop.

As luck would have it, a shop @ McKinney is also opening up @ KGYI - right across from my hanger. The FBO said they're a good group of folks so I'll let everyone know how it goes,. Savvy didn't have anyone close to recommend so I was on my own with this one...

Well, finally found the log entry to find out the governor I have:

McCauley C290D5

16 years since last overhaul and has 564 hrs on it. Prop cable and bracket replaced at that time too...

Very interesting with it bypassing on such low time...

Most likely it wasn't the 564 hours of use that caused it to fail. It was probably the 139,596 hours of non-use in 16 years that did.

Most items have a recommended overhaul in hours used or years between overhaul, whichever comes first. Not sure what that is on prop governors, maybe 10 years.

Plane is at air-o (http://airotexas.com/). Working with Byam's to get some details on the governor- may go with McCauley after Byam's look at my current governor (they want to look at it before I move forward).

Both service centers are really helpful with working through this. Weather is going to suck for the next week so this is good time to do this.

Well, the intrigue keeps going - Byam's checked the prop governor and she is bypassing very little but, not enough to cause the prop reaction so - we're removing the prop as Byam's suspects the prop may be 'gunked up' inside from limited use over the last 10 years. She was last resealed in 2010. 
 

Crossing fingers here. PCU5000 is being sent back as I already have the good McCauley according to Byam's. Nice that Byam's and Air-O Specialists are working to get things working.

When the prop is off it'll be easy to check whether the crank snout is gooped up, too.   Apparently that's pretty common.

Have you done a propeller leak test per Lycoming SI 1462A?   This checks the prop and the crank seals for excessive leakage, but must be done with the prop attached.   It's not very hard to do and can be done with a normal compression tester at the prop/governor oil fitting at the front of the engine.

While the prop is off...

That is the opportunity to see the shaft seal inside the shaft...

The shaft is through drilled for the oil to reach the prop...

The back of the hole is sealed with a simple aluminum disc...

Not much holding the disc in place...

If the disc escapes... the gov can’t do it’s job...

If the disc leaks a little... it probably gives all kinds of hassles...

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic...

So, talking to AIR-O and Byams, they both recommended using the McCauley governor (gone through by Byams) and test the operation before doing the prop.

So, we're putting things back together and, weather permitting, go and test it out...

Well, did a maintenance flight today, ground ops much better after Byam's went through the governor but air ops still not there. Wednesday, prop coming off for a look through.

Prop comes back tomorrow! Crank plug looks fine and no sludge built up in the shaft area. The IRAN'd governor was pressure tested before install and is putting out the correct pressure. Waiting to find out what Byam's found on the prop - hoping to test it out ASAP.

Just got off the phone with Byam's.  Good news, prop looks fine and a simple cleanup and seals were done.  Now the scary part:

Put the prop on, do a run up, then -- the pressure differential test (1462A) as @EricJ recommended.

The worst case is the test shows a bad main -- and that is the scary part.  Fingers crossed as she was IRAN'd 565 hrs ago...

Yeah, we're going to put the prop on and then I'll fly it before we do the pressure test -- Byam's and my AP wants me to do that first.

After that, it will be pucker time if she still does not move. ;o(
