#1 B&C 200G Alternator

I bought my BC12D last summer and it came with a 12A alternator made by B&C, the 200G model. The alternator was in a box of other parts and hasn't been installed on the plane. There is an STC for the TCraft for the 30A version but not this one. I have heard that there might be some field approvals out there and I was hoping someone could help me out with this. If you have any leads on a field approval I would like to know about it. Also, has anyone recently tried to get a field approval (for anything) based on an older field approval on a similar aircraft?

Thanks,

Tony

When I looked into get my Mooney field approved for a B&C, I contacted them directly and they were extremely helpful on what it would take to get a field approval. What I learned is it is best not to be the first person looking for a field approval. :)

I would give them a call. If you have the incorrect unit, maybe they will do an exchange with you.

I would run it through the FSDO and try to get a one time field approval. If I didn’t like the answers I was getting I would install it. Does your airplane have an electrical system already? I would strongly argue that you are not changing the basic design of the electrical system lowering the output from 30-15a.  So many of these old Taylorcrafts and Cubs have electrical systems that were added later that have nothing but a log entry. My dad has a 41 T-Cart with no official electrical system. However there is a nice spot for a small battery under the seat.

I really disagree.

Basic design of a Mooney electrical system, certified under CAR3:

-1 battery, 1 generator/alternator, one voltage regulator, one bus bar

New design with a B&C alternator:

-1 battery, 2 alternators, 2 voltage regulators, 2 bus bars, and a method to automatically shed the non-essential bus or to automatically shed individual circuits to comply with the limited output of the standby alternator.

That sure sounds like a major alteration to me, and I bet every FSDO in the country would agree.

Correct,  adding a second electrical system is a major change. However, He’s talking about a Taylorcraft. If there is an existing electrical system, Changing from a 30a system to a 15a system I would not consider major change. If there is not an existing electrical system, one could be added with a field approval. If he has an electrical system and just wants the paperwork to be correct buy the 30A STC and make an amendment to the STC through B&C. Or have B&C add the 15a system added to their paperwork. Sorry for the confusion.

Tony,

It is really going to be really helpful to be extra clear when speaking about other planes....

Keep in mind, it’s MooneySpace...

People are genuinely helpful when you try harder....

Otherwise, there is going to be plenty of confusion thrown on top...

Best regards,
