Dynon SkyView HDX in a MOONEY! | IN-FLIGHT REVIEW | BEST full GLASS AFFORDABLE PANEL EVER!

Recommended Posts

Consider Subscribing and Fly Along! It was a long but fun process replacing all my analogue instruments with digital avionics. After 3 months in the shop it was time to #FlyDynon. This is my first time sharing my experience flying the Dynon SkyView HDX on film. Check out the in-flight review. Join me in my MooneyM20C Ranger as we fly around the North East. Thanks for Flying Along!

What autopilot is certified to work with this system?

Most will work.  Not 100% sure if there is any it wont work with.

Dynon has their own autopilot which I am waiting for the approval from the FAA.

Check out Dynon's website.

I really like the dual screen. Very very nice! I will likely move forward with a panel upgrade once I Dynon gets their autopilot STC’d and they come out with something to replace the D-10A.  I really with I could get dual screens like you in my J but I don’t think it’s possible due to the frame behind the panel.

Has that been confirmed from Dynon? I was looking at doing the same with my J this winter, - I didn't think it would be an issue since they're relatively thin screens & all the add on units are remotely located from the screen itself?

The center rack and right side rack on most Mooneys are designed for 6.3” wide avionics such as transponders, radios, GPS navigators, etc. The smaller Dynon screen is 7” wide so it won’t fit.

Dynon will have the autopilot approved for the Mooney sometime this year.  Hoping in the next 4 or so months.

New around here?  IMO TT will beat them out of the gate.  Dynon told me 3 years ago at OSH they would have the AP ready at the end of the year

I really really hope so but looks like they’re a lot further behind the Bonanza.

I hear you.  The whole thing with the MAX kept the FAA really busy and they put all the GA stuff aside. That pushed back a lot of approvals with the FAA

So how was this install done then? Sorry for the dumb question - if you put in a new, custom cut panel like he did here, couldn't you still fit 2 10" displays in a J?

You obviously wouldn’t try to fit the screen in the radio stack... It’s an MFD and PFD. The entire panel has to come out and be replaced.

this evening I successfully squeezed the 10 inch display into the right side. It’s so tight I had to shave down a screw to make it fit, but fit it did. The 7 inch would be cake. The left side is NBD but I don’t have that side mounted yet.

What kind of plane did you squeeze the 10” display into on the right side? I have a 78 J and I don’t see any way that even the 7” would fit in there.  Can you post a picture?

Just combine the two center racks into one.

The screens are thin, the shelf to mount all the boxes on add some depth.   There are enough boxes that the shelves are important.

I would say Dynon was about a year behind on their AML that included the Mooney.   I believe there were 2 government shutdowns during that time.   I would say 2021 to be safe for the AP servos to be ready.   Which will add say $2000 isjh to the price but then it is all integrated.   I think the price to repair a King system now days is about 2K.    Is BK coming out with an integrated flight deck?

Depending on your airplane, the shelf is a tight squeeze and will require some modification. In my case, on the right side panel in my 67c I cut basically the whole tray off and was only able to use the right vertical piece. I used it to mount the transponder, adsb in unit, and display battery. Making it fit was a challenge to the point I had to shorten a screen that holds the windshield in.

at its worst there’s 2mm clearance.

it would have been easier not to use the tray and make something myself.

I got the wiring harness for the servos and when I asked for clarification of which wing, wings, or if it was going in the back area the answer I got was that they were still doing trial and error.

sounds like it’s going to be a while.

Wing would be easiest.   When I ran the wires for the magnamomenter I ran the wires for the servo.  so at least one wing is done.   Also ran an extra 8 conductor to the avionics bay.   So all good.
