steingar
Went to fly Saturday and found my strobe nonfunctional. Due to my ham-handed wrenching the navigation light quickly joined it, the red glass cover is in pieces. I thought the strobe might come out like a regular bulb, but of course not! So how do you remove a thing like this and where do ai source new ones?
Ross Taylor
PM me your address and I'll put a red and green globe in the mail to you.
cliffy
What make and model is it? Then look on the manufacturer's website to find if parts are available. Get the part numbers and start a search by part number from a variety of sources
1964-M20E
Aveo engineering Ultra Galactica 3 in one strobe. I have these are they are very nice. https://www.aveoengineering.com/ultra-galactica-2/ Or the wingtip version very very nice. steingar
That's a good thought. I thought I was going to have to replace it with the same thing, but I think I'll do both, since I doubt the starboard light it far behind it. Don't need to stick to the same thing. bradp
I have a set of frankenstrobes (grimes) from a 77J that you can have steingar- I'll send a pic of the housing. Strobes work but they were old when I replaced them with Orions.
MB65E
I used to think the same thing about timing, some last longer than others. But most only fail when you mess with them. I’d leave the other side alone until it fails. I’ve also learned to put blankets or foam on the floor each time take a wingtip apart. Whelen chroma lights are really neat for the Navs. I still find the old strobes distract the mind and eyes differently/better than the new led strobes. A true CB would just put another bulb or tube in and fly. Matt
MB65E
I have a few red and green lenses if needed also Matt
Oscar Avalle
I would suggest you move over to LEDs... less problematic.
Guest
Looks like a Whelen A-427 flash tube and a W1284R lens. Clarence
steingar
I’m thinking to replace both, since the other isn’t far behind. I have no idea how to do the swap, might even ask my mechanic to do it at annual. I’m due next month. The blankets and foam are a dang good idea in hindsight. steingar
Looks like the bulb is OK, don't need to replace. I do need to replace the power supply. A full AMU for one of those things.
MB65E
eBay should have loads of them now with everyone upgrading to LEDs. -Matt
1967 427
Just a shot in the dark, but it looks very similar to this from Chief Wingtip Flash Tube Assembly, for A429 Strobe In Stock Item: WHL A427

Getting a pair of LEDs is about the same money as the fool power supply. Had to pay my mechanic to remove the other power supply, sounds like money will spent.

I'll post up some photos when I get the ship back, provided I have enough left in my bank account to pay the electric bill.
bonal
Even the smallest things can really be a major setback. Owning a vintage airplane has to be a twisted labor of love. Hope it all works out.
OSUAV8TER
An Orion 650 is a direct replacement for this legacy unit. You dump this, the old strobe power packs, and keep your existing wiring. Installation time is probably a few hours maximum for a competent mechanic. LEDs are brighter, last longer, weigh less, and look way better! Many Mooney 20C aircraft take the OR6501G and the OR6501R. Don't forget the OR5001V for the tail! http://www.gallagheraviationllc.com/whelen-aircraft-lighting.html Email me with any questions - gallagheraviationllc@gmail.com
