Logic in Production Nr. M20C?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Is there any logic in Production Nr. of Mooney (M20C)?

In Wikipedia I have found: M20C- Production years 1962-1978 with Production quantity 2422.

In "All American Aircraft Sales" I found (1978 M20C Ranger): "One of the very last M20C.  2093 were built before this ohne, only 14 after" what does not match with the data in Wiki (2093+1+14=2108).

Does anyone know how many M20C was delivered in 1977 and 1978?

Mine is from 1977 and have Production Nr. 20-1230. Is it possible to find out how many were built before/after mine 1977 M20C?

Thanks a lot,

Milos, Austria

According to Mooney your serial number makes it a 1976.  Last one built in the 1976 model year was 20-1239.  20-1240 is the first built for 1978.

My plane according to the FAA is a 1975, however it is actually a 1976 per Mooney.  It appears that Mooney and governmental agencies have a communication problem.

I've seen mine listed as '65 and '66 depending on where I look.  It will be listed as '66 when I sell it, but as a '65 for the tax man.

Wow, zero M20-Cs were built in 1977 . . . . Must have had money problems again that year . . . .

S/Ns  20-1219 to 20-1243 should be 1977 Mooneys ( 24 delivered) :-)).

1976- 32

1978- 14

Any explanation for discrepancy in Service and maintanance manual for 1976-78 production?

Just curious.

Best regards,

M

Some issues in serialization that occurred...

Serialization wasn’t very popular in manufacturing in general... like it is today...

Serialization by Mooney changed along the way... they started just numbering all the planes they built... then somewhere along the way they were serializing by product line...

Knowing what year your Mooney was built is generally helpful, but...

The model year and the actual year may have been off by a few months....

One of the quirkiest details... the build date of the airplane is considered the day it passes the final quality check... the AW stamp with signature in the first airframe log book is a key piece of information...

there are some individual quirks as some airframes worked as test mules in development... they were built and modified for the next few months before being returned to manufacturing to be finished to the standard of the day...  their serial numbers and their AW flight dates were really out of line with other serial numbers...

Good serialization leads to...

Good records, leads to...

Good maintenance, leads to...

Less maintenance errors, leads to...

Higher remaining value...

Many MSers have memorized their S/N(s)...

It is a number that is stored deep inside the memory, and would take something really strong to erase it...

Summary... last day of actual construction, build date, AW flight, delivery date... one would have to know the source of the date being discussed...   in finance... getting the plane past the pay point is critical... that usually requires getting it into the hands of the paying customer...

PP thoughts on machine manufacturing... not a machinist or mechanic... or a finance guy...

Best regards,
