M20E Avionics Upgrade Project

Recommended Posts

I for one will be following - I am doing something similar.  At least you have a Garmin 430 (which is part of our upgrade)

I will be making a new panel as soon as I find how to do the pilot side with the bend around the right edge (which is how yours is too).

Also - looks like you have some old Transponder - what are you doing for ADS-B?

Very interested to see.  I'm moving in this direction as well.  Curious why you left all of the intrusions into the panel area.  I know you are perhaps only using those places now, but it leaves weight and I doubt provides any extra support...

I'd love to see the install of the different sensors on the MVP gauge as well...  I have an EDM that needs installing.

Well alright alright don’t twist my arm I’ll share:)

so we are ripping out the entire right side of the panel, the old stuff you’re seeing is the old very flimsy panel, it’s unbelievably thin, it seems previous guy needed something quick and just made what you see, the old cutouts you’re seeing on the plane is original, it will be trimmed. Friend is CAD guy and will draw up a new one, saw bunch of people needing the CAD file so I’ll be sharing my blank. Contacted couple companies for quotes on just tracing/cnc-ing new one and us finishing, steep pricing so far for something so basic, basically two lines cut.
I have SkyBeacon for ADS-B but will be removing in favor for Garmin GTX 345 GPS which answers the old coffee grinder transponder question. For the altitude encoder I chose Garmin’s for the sake of simplicity, 3 wires and static. I know it’s proprietary to the 345 but I plan on keeping it. Read few posts here about shock mounts for panels, I’ve elected to replace the left completely destroyed ones and mount new ones with shock mounts. Super rough draft of new panel, friend working on CAD as we speak.
Found out on here I have resistive fuel probes, E.I. takes capacitive readings but after calling them they confirm they can sell me their $100 RFLM module which solves fuel reading issue.
Guy doing the wiring on MVP-50P has done them before and he does a very nice and clean layout I have confidence in him. While the plane is ripped apart we are also doing my annual too, couple months early but might as well get it all done.
So far new fuel pump, some hoses, few gaskets (2 of them base seals :/)

Here is the final. Posting Layered Illustrator files for you guys to use too.

2/9/20 Edit - final corrected dimensions updated.

smaller 7mb file is plain PDF, large 84mb file is layered so you can turn on/off what you seeing or import and edit.

Before anything else, Illustrator file requires revision! Some dimensions incorrect, will advise when corrected.

so jugs are off, they are doing the base seals tonight. I am having no luck finding fuel sender probe gaskets for both sides. Blue around them so we want to replace if you guys can help with part numbers. I have the parts catalog but found no reference to gaskets.
first MVP-50P harness started going in last night. 05876CE7-3717-4DDC-A708-D85C877F480E.thumb.jpeg.280da728f8f2c207a8ec13fd0ae95b35.jpeg

Nothing some duct tape can't fix! Still seeing if anybody has a clue about the part number on the fuel sender probe gaskets.

I can’t find the part number in the E model IPC, but from the J model it should be the same gasket.  Search “fuel transmitter gasket” at Spruce, they’re all the same.

Had one leaking when I first got my E, A&P pulled one from his stock, it was for a Cessna if memory serves

Test panel went in like a glove it was a perfect match. Still going to do Lexan one just to be 100% sure then 090 aluminum. Guys did the wiring loom last night they should start installs today and getting jugs back on. While we at it we decided to do my audio panel too, installing Garmin GMA 340. This isn’t neck deep, this is Mariana Trench deep now.
