0TreeLemur
If a radio is required, you need some way to listen to it. If your intercom is working and you have a headset, you are covered. In my a/c the speaker is a convenience so I can listen to comms without headphones. That is pretty much only possible when not in flight. In flight it is hard to hear the speaker. rbridges
All those old pilots and flight instructors with hearing loss can vouch for its utility.
carusoam
So.... Not required... But... When it comes to plans B... A second headset, plugged into a second set of receptacles... Can work... Or the speaker in the ceiling works... If you have any questions about hardware that is required... go to the POH... there is a list of required equipment in there... often it is a few lists to cover what is needed for VFR, IFR, Day, Night... PP thoughts only, not a CFI... Best regards, -a-
