Does that count as a prop strike?

Next time I guess it was not such a money saver not to pay the line guy after all to pull that gpu for him.

Also, is he still PIC if he is technically in the baggage compartment when it taxi's into the tree?

That is a good question.  I think this is one for the aviation lawyer specialists.

Ever seen one of those videos of a hand-propped piper cub getting away from the pilot and actually taking off and flying away?  Imagine that happening with a Pt6 powered 206 with an ATP rated pilot in the baggage compartment?!

Does he get to log the time riding in the baggage compartment?  Pic?  Sic?  Nic?  (Not in command).

Good questions. Because there was no crew whatsoever when he was outside the plane and it taxi'd away.... then he ran down the plane and jumped in the back...

So, does exiting the plane terminate his status as PIC at that point? And what is his status if he re-boards the aircraft as PAX or baggage?

@carusoam  .... like to get an engineering opinion here....probably need an attorney to weigh in as well @DonMuncy

This goes into the engineering category of....

If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong...

Most of us don’t have turbines in our Mooneys yet...

The closest we can come to replicating this wonderful piece of wackiness...

Improper hand propping...

Somebody has to be behind the controls...

A good quality rope might work... not a piece of rope that is sun drenched... we know how well that works too...

Basic rule of thumb... don’t let your airplane embarrass you...   :) it will when given the opportunity...

then your friends will remind you about how much you raised their insurance...

Best regards,

get back in, leave engine running for 20 mins or so to charge/warm battery and then shutdown, remove chocks, do pre-flight and restart and go

Sounds reasonable: The PT-6A-20 in this plane burns only about 16 GPH in ground idle.  Maybe the pilot didn’t want to “waste” 5-6 gallons of JetA.

I bet if you ask him now he would be okay with that....

I have PT6 time and he probably used the GPU because of low battery volts for start. I don't have 206 time, so maybe there is another reason to use the GPU. However, this accident is attributed to complacency and decision making. There were several ways he could have solved the lack of crew problem. Bummer because accidents like this are preventable and raise insurance rates.
