Lots of open water today.   Opa Locka (KOPF) to Turks and Caicos (MBPV).  
27,000ft just over 2 hours with a turn in the hold on arrival to the island.

Sorry for taking so long.

The text on the front is 'MEDECO' and '72S' is the number under the text to the left of the keyhole. Right of the keyhole inside the ring are the letters 'UL'. The white text underneath is 'JANCO'.

The ignition was fitted 12 years ago.

My 2020 flying exploits started out sloooooow. I never flew for the first 19 days. I’m sure I took it out on everyone around me..... But since then I have put 23.3 hours on the plane. Still less than a lot and I wish it was more but all but one of the flights were cross country’s. Exactly what the Mooney was made for.

This morning I woke up to my alarm at 4:30 to prep the plane for my first Angel Flight West transport. I was flying the first leg and I had to be in Spokane Washington around 7:30am. I wanted to be wheels up by 6. The benefit I was bringing them back to my home airport for the start of the second leg. That meant I would be obligation free after 10:30, I had the full day off work. So a buddy and I flew up to Hood River for a late lunch at Twin Peaks. It’s a restaurant right next to the field. If you ever have the excuse to stop I recommend it.

The Angel flight patient didn’t want any pictures taken. I couldn’t be more understanding of their privacy. But I did get some pictures of the sun rising. One of the best ways to start the day!

We flew back from Spruce Creek (Daytona Beach, FL) this morning to the U.P., nonstop ....... with significant headwinds.   I loved my Rocket, but could never have done that with 40-60 knot headwinds.  Not with headwinds for sure (absent ferry tanks). 

So ....... wondering a couple things.   It seems pretty consistent headwind forecasts on FLTPLAN.com are higher than forecasted.  My flight should have been 4:05 hours and I gained 15 minutes of flight time based on much higher actual headwind component?

Second item; my filed speed through FLTPLAN.com was 300 knots and Flight Aware shows it was 307 MPH (267 Knots)????  Evidenced by my screen shot of my filed plan with them and the Flight Aware data.   Anyone know what’s going on there??

And no, I’m not complaining!!!!  Just wondering what’s going on?

Sorry I’m not smart enough to know what the issue is with the two speeds. But it’s a good complaint to have non the less...:)

Not in a Mooney but a memorable flight to Milford Sound, NZ (NZMF).. Not a Mooney in sight, but several 182's and Caravans and a couple strange other things. Our ship was a Airbus H125. I could still smell the new car smell.

I could be wrong, but I believe what flight aware does is divide your distance by ETE to do a “filed” speed calculation.  Clearly this isn’t the TAS that you filed but some other calculation that factors in headwind/tailwind component. 
 

I haven’t read this anywhere but that’s what I’m guessing it is after seeing similar inconsistencies on my end.

Not in my patnership Mooney (prop & engine & fuel pump are out :() but the school DA40 turned to be the right replacement aircraft for strong winds we have in UK these days !

Trip to Duxford Musuem, the SR71 is the fatest beast it also has weired tail that rotate to make an elevator trim, just sayin ;) in comparison the Concord sitting next hangar does elevator trim by pumping fuel between the tail and the body and no trim tab, in Mooneys we missed this trick :lol: the Avro Vulcan is stick trim free but no Mooney comparaison: draggy and hard to hand fly, like a Bo !

Well, two flights today pretty much blew away any validation to anything FLTPLAN.com is doing with my filed speeds.  They were 57 MPH’s off (low) to my speed they “adjusted” BEFORE considering the 25 knot headwind (was actually off by 80 MPH).  The return flight 6 hours later pretty much validated my “filed speeds” were right on the money.  

Guess time to inquire with FLTPLAN.com what’s going on or find a different flight planning program.

Today's flight was yesterday. We flew down to LVK to visit the family was also my verification flight for my newly installed Sky beacon (thanks to Spleecho) for not only a nice price on his used unit but for programming it to my transponder. Called Oakland center prior to flight to advise and after climbing out over the lake to assure line of sight for radio contact. Reached out to center which responded right away with a code and confirmed receiving gps signal cleared us ok for VFR navigation direct to destination within the mode C veil. As always Snoopy performance was perfect and trip was without any issues. The dispatch rate of this little airplane has been 99.999% in the several years we have owned it.

Also just to let folks know the restaurant at Lampson 1o2 has re opened after some renovation and new management. Haven't tried it yet it's called Reds at the Sky Room. And they have added a pilots lounge that is next to LASAR. To access enter AWOS frequency.

Yesterday on an IFR practice flight from TCL to ANB, in cruise at 7000 ft, T=1C with a freezing level forecast to be at 8000 ft, I looked up from my scan to see this.  I was flying through supercooled raindrops that were freezing even though the air temperature was above freezing.   My request for lower was immediately approved, I took this photo in the descent.  The wings looked just as bad as the windshield.

Here's my dam pictures. Finally got a break from the rain (20" so far this month, not counting today) over the weekend.

This is the big dam that makes Lake Martin, usually clear and the cleanest water in the South.

Sorry the photo is small, but note the huge whirlpool at the bottom. Water fownstream is very close to the highway. 

This is the little power generating dam 9 miles downstream. It's right in town . . . .
