if you want it for redundancy, then the 7" has to have its own ADHRS, otherwise its just mirrors PFD display, and if the underlying sensor system goes out, you won't get the redundancy your asked for

in my flying family, when I am in right seat most of what I care about in is in the center stack -- NAVCOM, moving map, and the cockpit is small enough to see the left side of the panel.  a PFD for the right seat is good in IFR if you want two pilots looking at the AI. On long trips, my son often likes to exercise the privileges of his ATP (see photo), but not in IMC

The 7" MFD on the right can act as PFD repeater, but unfortunately the Garmin STC prohibits its use as an independent PFD with its own ADAHRS. If the primary PFD fails, the MFD goes into reversion PFD mode using data from the same GSU 25D that drives the primary PFD. The AFMS extract I posted earlier alludes to this:

"The display of PFD information on an MFD is a duplication of the original PFD information and is not an independent compilation of data from other sources."

For what ever reason during the certification process Garmin decided or was possibly directed by the FAA to only allow one G3X display in the cockpit to function as a primary PFD. This seems a bit odd as the required G5 stand-by has its own AHRS and is functioning right along side the G3X in normal operations. This is a good question for a Garmin tech rep as I expect there is some logic behind it involving system interface complexities.

Not perfect, but usable.

But what does it give versus an AERA 760 mounted there?

@Pinecone I’m not familiar enough with the AERA 760 to answer that, but a couple of things that might be unique to the GDU 470 7” display is the ability to split screen, and to display the EIS strip and engine page. Can the 760 display approach plates? That might be another difference.

If none of those things are important to you then the AERA 760 could be the way to go.

I don't know much about tables to advise you on what to choose. I love to play ping pong, but I never bothered to find out what racquets I play with, on what table, or anything like that. Every time after a work week, I go to play ping pong with my wife. But work is not about work, we don't work. Like Baker Avionics stated, Garmin is getting waaaaay Disney proprietary and pricing. Decent product, but ugh. I despise their business practices. Avidyne is a fine product- I installed another one today. I also installed a 650 last week…

The cost of the dynon is *dramatically* less. I genuinely can’t say the functionality is dramatically less by a mile. The install is certainly pretty intuitive and thorough. I may install one in my K model.

I still cringe these days when I hear someone mention spending $100k on a GA panel. :). Dual dynon HDX, EMS, comm, IFD550, backup AI, pma8000bt (he should have done 450), ADSB, transponder, autopilot, all under 40k…

But with so many Garmin fan boys eager to give them and avionics shops money…

A quick search shows the equipment alone:
Dynon $26500
IFD550 $19500
PMA8000 $1900

So not under $40k, but $47900, add installation costs rule of thumb (50%), and you’re looking at $70,000. Not that much different than a Garmin panel.

Just configured the HDX system I referred to with spruce at todays prices - $19k and change. Retail pricing

7 grand matters….not factoring any other discounts.

Spruce prices are for experimental…I got the price directly from Dynon for certified system, I forgot about the autopilot, so that’s additional 7 grand, as you say matters.
