Transition training & ferry from KVNC to the SF Bay Area

Hey all!

First time posting, because I just purchased a Mooney from Florida! I live in Northern California and I would like to bring it home soon.

I have 188tt and no IR, no complex; I'm looking for a CFII who could help me ferry the plane, while providing transition training. Please let me know if you'd be able and interested. It would be great if we can do this in December.

The plane is a 1983 m20j with two g5s, a 530w and a kap150.

Congratulations, I’ve made this trip several times, for planning purposes you should expect the trip to add up to about 20hrs in the logbook, generally you will have headwinds and probably will have to transient through at least one bad weather system. Because of that, it usually takes me 4 days going west, instead of 3.
Have fun

Welcome aboard Adi.

Learning to fly a fast plane... Some new pilots are concerned about falling behind the plane...

If I understand this situation... this is more cart, before the horse...   :)

The good news... the Mooney was built for this type of travel...

I guess the question is how to get you up to speed while delivering your plane home...

Did you have any challenges getting insurance? Did they give you a number of dual hours to fly in the plane?

See if @mike_elliott has room in his schedule...  Mike is an excellent resource on all things Mooney flying... and knows quite a bit about getting pilots up to speed...

Let’s get the horse out front! :)

The only real problem I see... what happens if you like the East Coast Venice, better than the West Coast Venice? You might want to stay around for a while...

Best regards,

Thanks folks!

I visited VNC a few days ago when I went to see the plane, test-fly it and put it into pre-buy. I liked it, you guys have better weather in winter than we have here in California :)

Re: insurance: not particularly challenging, just the premium is very steep in the first year - around $4500 *sigh*. Avemco said I can readjust mid-cycle once I get 30 hours in type to get around 10% discount, and some more after I get my IR. I need 10 hours of dual with Avemco. (One of AOPA's underwriters gave me a quote with 3 hours of dual required)

@mike_elliott - yes, please let me know what your schedule looks like and if you'd be willing.

Interesting to see the cost of insurance to change mid cycle...

The usual is to be stuck with the full price for the year...

Invest in the training... get some flight hours... Long X-Cs add value... an IR is good for your health...

PP thoughts only, not a CFI....

Best regards,

Another option is Adam Valencic (http://www.themooniac.com/).  He ferried my J from Tampa to San Diego nearly 2 years ago.  He's a CFI and A&P/IA and gave me some dual instruction after getting it here.  Real nice guy and a Mooney specialist.  Based out of Apopka.

Edit: and congratulations on the purchase!
