Integrated video camera

So the Dynon Skyview has a video input.   The idea solution would be a remote control POD mounted FLIR camera.    Runways should have different heat signatures....

 

But scaling it back what would be the best direction to point the camera?  For just regular video.   Rear Facing for when you line up and wait.   Gear Facing?

They make FLIR security cameras.   So a couple thousand.   Would it work through the wind screen?   Would the prop interfere with it if it was mounted to the center post?

The frame rate is pretty low on them so they can't be used for sniper stuff.

Possibilities.   Go forth and ponder.

Looking for the runway...

mounted on the main landing gear might be a nice place for a clear view...?

mounted in the wing or wing tip, like a landing light would be sweet...

It could really boost the situational awareness in lower IFR conditions.

 

Just don’t accidentally raise your risk tolerance by using some unproven technology...

PP thoughts only, not a CFI or instrument guy...

The Max-Viz stuff is stupid expensive.    It appears that the input format for both Garmin and Avidyne is essentially NTSC, so any cheapie NTSC video camera would work, like the kind that are about $15 on Amazon.   I don't know what input format Dynon requires.

Would it work through the wind screen?  No, infrared cannot see through glass or plexiglass.  The sensor sees electromagnetic radiation that’s emitted by everything.  The hotter something is the more it emits EMR.  Put something solid in between the source and the sensor and you block it and it just sees the plastic whether clear or solid, it looks the same.  It also cannot see under or through water.

 

Would the prop interfere with it if it was mounted to the center post?  Above response dictates you can’t put it on the center post in the cockpit.  Mounting it on the belly looking through the prop could work as EMR would only be blocked when the prop blade is turning and obstructs the sensor however your exhaust faces down and to the side so that would cause some interference. 
 

Best place to put the infrared sensor (camera) would probably be under the wing near the pilot tube.

Wire the NTSC input and put whatever you want on the wing tie down or an inspection panel mounted temporarily (pull a wire through the wing root) .  You might need something to filter the prop (depends on whether vis vs IR spectrum is bandpassed and that’s way above my pay grade.
