ADS-B options

I just bought a K and it doesn't have ADS-B yet. Ideally, I would be flying with the current panel for at least a few months (or years) then decide on an upgrade, however, Jan 1 is just around the corner so I have to decide on a temporary solution. Below is my current set up (XPDR is a GTX 33 remote so can be upgraded to GTX 33-ES).

Any thoughts?

Slap a uAvionics tail strobe on to use while you research. Quick, easy, fairly inexpensive. Assuming they are OK in the Flight Levels.

Skybeacon or Tailbeacon would limit you to 17,999ft.  Have to go 1090ES to be in the Flight Levels.

A GTX33ES will slide into the existing transponder rack. You will have to add a few wires between the GTX33 and your WAAS navigator — that is a WAAS 480 you have in your panel, correct?  

A used GTX33ES would be about the same cost as a tailbeacon & you have a long-term solution.   

The trick may be finding a shop to install it this year.

Find used TXPR at the reaper shop...

see if that helps with the economics...

Better to have everything hard wired together... than a second device paired independently...

Even though I went with the independent paired....

Upgrade it to the ES and hook up to your 480, then you are all set.

I’ve heard some shops keep upgraded ES in stock so I’ll try to get that done before year end. Thank you for the always useful replies.

Agree with the shop times...that will become your bottleneck...everyone is starting to race to comply with the 1/2020 mandate and shop slots are filling up pretty fast...

I am “waiting” on Garmin to return a 330 upgrade to ES...A&P saying they are backlogged..

Is this legit?

I was told OH/Exch would be longer. Maybe that's what your A&P is trying.

No. Sent our unit into Garmin for upgrade to ES.

Just sent my 330 out for ES upgrade. Tech says 7-10 days and no backlog. Cheaper than uavionix and 1090 compliant.
